Brentford Under-21s will enter the EFL Trophy for the first time after the academy gained Category One status.
Brentford Under-21s will play in the EFL Trophy for the first time during the 2026/27 season.
The club confirmed their academy side’s invitation to the competition, following the step up to Category One status earlier this year.
While Brentford’s first team have featured in the EFL Trophy before, this marks a first for the Under-21s. The Bees will be ball number two in the southern section when the group-stage draw takes place at 2.30pm on Thursday, 25 June.
The EFL Trophy brings together clubs from League One and League Two, joined by 16 invited academy teams from Premier League and Championship clubs who hold Category One status.
Brentford join seven other Under-21 teams in the southern section, lining up with the likes of Arsenal, Brighton, Chelsea, Crystal Palace, Fulham, Ipswich Town and Tottenham Hotspur.
The group stage is made up of 16 regional groups of four. The 48 EFL clubs are already in place, with the Under-21 sides to be drawn in. The top two from each group go through to the knockouts, with the regional format staying in place until the quarter-finals.
The first round of games is expected to kick off in early September, with dates to be confirmed once the EFL fixtures are out.
Speaking via Brentford's website, Academy Director David Rainford said the invitation was an important next step for the club’s player pathway.
“From an academy perspective, our entry into the EFL Trophy is a positive step following our move to Category One status,” Rainford said.
“It provides a genuine opportunity for our B-team players to experience senior football within a competitive and meaningful environment.
“For our young players, facing League One and League Two opposition, away from home and in first-team stadiums, is a significant part of their development.
“These are the types of challenges that help them adapt to the demands of the professional game, both on and off the pitch.”
This move follows a period of real progress for Brentford’s academy. Category One status, confirmed in March, puts the club in a better position to compete at elite academy level and create a clearer pathway for young talent.
Now, the EFL Trophy offers Brentford’s young players a regular chance to measure themselves against senior pros.
Brentford B head coach Sam Saunders said entering the competition had been one of the club’s early priorities after the academy upgrade.
“One of the first things that we asked for when we got Category One status was to try and get into this competition,” Saunders said.
“It’s important for our young players for their development to play in stadiums with crowds, test themselves against first-team players who have more experience and will play with different styles.
“It’s a great competition that we can’t wait to play in and hopefully the boys can express themselves and showcase their talent.”
For Brentford, this invitation is about more than just extra fixtures. It gives the Under-21s a real bridge between academy football and the senior game.
The draw will soon reveal which League One and League Two sides Brentford will face in the group stage, but the bigger picture is clear. The Bees want their young players to face tougher, more realistic senior tests as they keep building around their upgraded academy.
