Ethan Pinnock is set to leave Brentford after seven years at the club, with Coventry agreeing a deal worth up to £6million for the defender.
Coventry City are closing in on the signing of Ethan Pinnock, having struck a deal with Brentford that could be worth up to £6million for the centre-back.
Coventry will pay an initial £5million, with a further £1million in potential add-ons, according to The Athletic. Pinnock has been cleared to travel for a medical and is expected to sign a three-year contract, with the option of a further year.
Should the move go through, it will mark the end of a seven-year spell in west London for a player who played a key role in Brentford’s journey to the Premier League.
Pinnock arrived at Brentford from Barnsley in 2019 and went on to make 216 appearances in all competitions, chipping in with 12 goals and seven assists.
He quickly became a mainstay in the side that clinched promotion via the Championship play-offs in 2021, and continued as a regular during Brentford’s first years in the Premier League.
Pinnock’s Brentford Role Had Reduced
But things have changed over the past couple of years.
Now 33, Pinnock has found first-team chances harder to come by as Brentford have looked to refresh their defensive options.
He was an unused substitute in each of Brentford’s final eight Premier League games last season, and managed just eight appearances across all competitions, with only four coming in the league. A stark contrast from the 35 appearances he made across all competitions during the Bees' first Premier League season following promotion
His absence from the squad for Saturday’s 3-0 win over Tottenham on the opening day was another sign that he had slipped down Keith Andrews’ pecking order at the back.
Brentford have continued to strengthen their defence this summer, bringing in Jannik Schuster to add to a group that already features Nathan Collins, Sepp van den Berg, Kristoffer Ajer and several younger options.
Heading into the season, Pinnock has been facing increased competition for a place.
With his contract running until 2027, Brentford now seem prepared to let him move on, rather than risk losing an experienced player for nothing later.
Coventry Move Offers Pinnock Fresh Opportunity
Coventry are gearing up for their first season back in the Premier League and have wasted little time in strengthening Frank Lampard’s squad.
Pinnock is on course to become their ninth signing of the summer, and the second centre-back through the door after Aurele Amenda joined from Eintracht Frankfurt.
The move offers Pinnock the chance to stay in the Premier League and take on a a potentially more prominent role than he has at Brentford in recent times.
He will also bring valuable experience to a newly promoted side.
Alongside his 216 games for Brentford, Pinnock has 28 senior caps for Jamaica and featured throughout their recent World Cup qualification play-offs.
For Brentford, his departure marks another significant link to the promotion-winning side moving on.
Pinnock was among those who made the step up from the Championship to the Premier League with Brentford, becoming a dependable figure as the club established itself in the top flight.
His role may have faded in recent years, but the part he played in Brentford’s rise won’t be forgotten by fans.
