Brentford have confirmed goalkeeper Hakon Valdimarsson has signed a new long-term contract, extending his stay at the club.
Brentford have confirmed that Hakon Valdimarsson has signed a new long-term contract, keeping the Iceland international goalkeeper at the club until 2030.
Valdimarsson joined Brentford from IF Elfsborg in January 2024 and has now committed his future to the club for the next stage of his development. The new deal gives Brentford continuity in their goalkeeping department and reflects the progress the club believe he has made since arriving in west London.
In Brentford’s announcement, head coach Keith Andrews praised Valdimarsson’s role within the squad and the wider club environment. Brentford’s announcement,
“People maybe don’t recognise what goes on behind the scenes, and the importance of some of the players who are part of this journey,” Andrews said. “Hakon is a big part of the fabric of this football club, and he understands it.”
Andrews also pointed to the goalkeeper’s ability, adding: “He’s a very liked individual, he’s got some very close connections within the club, he’s an outstanding goalkeeper - we’ve seen that when he’s played this season - and we’re really happy that he’s signed a new deal.”
Valdimarsson’s own comments, made in Brentford’s club interview after signing the contract, focused on the progress he feels he has made since joining. The 24-year-old said he has developed significantly during his time at the club and feels more complete as a goalkeeper.
“I’ve learnt and developed a lot,” Valdimarsson said. “I just feel completely different. I’ve improved in everything as a goalkeeper.”
He also spoke positively about life under Andrews, saying: “I’m very happy here and now, since Keith took over, I’ve really enjoyed my time here. I speak a lot with him. He’s a very good manager but also a good guy.”
That relationship is notable given Andrews’ own comments about Valdimarsson’s place inside the group. The new contract is not being framed only around future potential, but also around the role he already plays within the squad. For a goalkeeper who has had to wait for regular first-team opportunities, that internal standing matters.
Valdimarsson has had to be patient since moving to England, but Brentford’s decision to extend his deal through to 2030 shows they view him as part of the longer-term picture. Goalkeepers often develop on a different timeline to outfield players, and Brentford now have the security of keeping him in their structure while he continues to push for more involvement.
For Valdimarsson, the deal provides a clear platform. He has spoken about feeling improved, settled and happy at the club. For Brentford, it keeps a young international goalkeeper tied down until 2030 and ensures one of their developing first-team options remains part of the squad for the long term.
