Aston Villa’s European heroics have unlocked a hidden path for the Bees. Discover how a sixth-place finish and a complex domino effect could trigger an unprecedented windfall.

Brentford’s European push could yet become a Champions League chase after Aston Villa booked their place in the Europa League final.

Keith Andrews’ side are in the battle for sixth place, and that position could become far more valuable depending on what happens to Villa over the final weeks of the season.

The Premier League has already secured an extra Champions League place through the European Performance Spot, meaning the top five will qualify for next season’s competition. But Villa’s run to the Europa League final has created an additional layer.

If Villa win the Europa League and also finish in the Premier League’s European Performance Spot, their league-based Champions League place would pass down to sixth. That is why Villa’s progress matters so much for Brentford, Bournemouth, Brighton and the other clubs still chasing sixth.

The important detail is that this route only opens because Villa are already in the league position that qualifies for the Champions League. Had Nottingham Forest reached the final and won the Europa League while finishing outside those places, sixth would not benefit in the same way. Forest would simply qualify as Europa League winners, while the Premier League’s top five would still take the league places.

Brentford briefly moved into sixth with their 3-0 win over West Ham before being overtaken again, and the race remains tight. Bournemouth and Brighton are both firmly involved, while other clubs still have enough points available to make the final table unpredictable.

The difficulty for Brentford is the run-in. They still have Manchester City, Crystal Palace and Liverpool to play, giving them one of the toughest schedules among the teams chasing sixth. City remain in the title race, while Liverpool's away on the final day could become a fixture loaded with consequences.

That final-day trip to Anfield could even create an unusual situation. As things stand, Liverpool and Villa are level on points in the race for fourth and fifth. For sixth place to become a Champions League position, Villa would need to finish below Liverpool while still occupying the league’s extra Champions League spot.

That means Brentford may find themselves in a strange position where their own result at Liverpool affects not only their push for sixth, but also whether Villa finish in the exact position required to pass the Champions League place down. In a very specific scenario, Brentford could need Liverpool to finish above Villa while also trying to secure enough points themselves to stay ahead of the clubs around them. All whilst needing points themselves to secure 6th position.

That underlines how complicated the picture remains. Brentford cannot control Villa’s final, Villa’s league finish, or the results of Bournemouth and Brighton. What they can control is their own response to a demanding run-in.

The West Ham win has at least given the Bees a platform. After six games without a victory, Brentford needed to turn competitive performances into points. Now, with a possible Champions League route attached to sixth place, every remaining match carries even greater weight.

The equation is conditional, but it is real. Villa must win the Europa League and finish in the right position. Brentford must finish sixth. If both happen, the Bees could qualify for the Champions League.
