Igor Thiago’s brace against Everton made him Brentford’s highest scorer in a single Premier League season and moved him to within one goal of Erling Haaland in the Golden Boot race.

Igor Thiago’s two goals against Everton did more than rescue a point for Brentford. They also moved the Brazilian into the club’s record books and tightened the race for the Premier League Golden Boot heading into the final weeks of the season.

Thiago scored from the penalty spot early on and then added Brentford’s second in the 2-2 draw at the Gtech. In doing so, he took his Premier League tally for the season to 21, a new Brentford record for a single top-flight campaign.

Brentford have spent the last few seasons proving they can compete in the Premier League, but individual landmarks of this scale still carry weight. Thiago is now producing numbers no Brentford player has managed before at this level.

The wider significance is just as striking. Erling Haaland remains top of the scoring charts on 22 goals, with Thiago now up to 21. That leaves the Brentford striker only one behind the Manchester City forward as the Golden Boot race moves into its final stretch.

That position says plenty about the season Thiago is having. He has become Brentford’s attacking focal point, delivered in big moments and maintained his output deep into the campaign. His goals against Everton were not empty ones in a comfortable win. Both mattered, both changed the direction of the game, and both underlined how central he is to Brentford’s push for Europe.

There is still a complicating factor in the Golden Boot race. Haaland has games in hand through Manchester City’s schedule, which means Thiago may need to keep scoring at his current rate if he is to stay in touch.

Even so, the context around Thiago’s rise is hard to ignore. He has already broken Brentford’s single-season Premier League scoring record, he is still within reach of the division’s leading scorer, and Brentford have six league games left to play. Brentford now have a striker chasing both club history and the Golden Boot.
