Brentford defender Jayden Meghoma has joined Portsmouth on loan for the 2026/27 season

Jayden Meghoma has joined Portsmouth on a season-long loan, with the Brentford defender heading back to the Championship for the 2026/27 campaign.

The 20-year-old returned to West London this summer after spending last season with Rangers, where he made 44 appearances across all competitions.

Meghoma was involved with Keith Andrews' squad during pre-season and had been given the No.21 shirt ahead of the new campaign, but will now continue his development at Fratton Park.

It is his third loan since joining the Bees from Southampton on deadline day in August 2024.

His first came midway through that season when Preston North End took him for the remainder of the Championship campaign. Meghoma played 12 times and registered one assist before returning to Brentford for pre-season.

The following season, Meghoma made the move to Scotland, joining Rangers on loan, featuring regularly during his season at Ibrox, playing in the Scottish Premiership and Europa League. He scored his first senior goal in a 2-2 draw with Dundee United and finished the campaign with six assists.

Speaking after returning from Scotland this summer, the left-back said he had come back to Brentford a “different player” after dealing with both the demands and pressure that came with playing for Rangers.

Meghoma Returns to the Championship

A loan spell at Portsmouth will now give Meghoma another opportunity to play regularly in England.

He has made just four competitive appearances for Brentford, including his Premier League debut as a late substitute against Chelsea in December 2024. His other three first-team appearances came in the Carabao Cup.

The situation at left-back has also changed since Meghoma returned from Rangers.

Rico Henry remains at Brentford, while Keane Lewis-Potter has regularly been used on the left side of defence. El Hadji Malick Diouf then arrived from West Ham towards the end of the summer window, adding another senior option for Andrews.

The Bees have previously been clear that regular first-team minutes form an important part of the plan for Meghoma.

When his Rangers loan was agreed last summer, director of football Phil Giles pointed to the competition at full-back and said another loan would give him the chance to continue developing through senior football.

The club made a sizeable commitment to Meghoma when signing him from Southampton. He agreed a four-year contract in 2024, with Brentford retaining an option to extend that deal by another two seasons.

His immediate future will now be at Portsmouth.

After 12 Championship appearances with Preston and a full season playing regularly for Rangers, Meghoma returns to the English second tier with considerably more senior experience than he had on his first loan away from Brentford.
