Brentford boss Keith Andrews has backed El Hadji Malick Diouf to become a brilliant signing despite a difficult start to life in West London.
Keith Andrews has backed El Hadji Malick Diouf as a "brilliant signing" for Brentford, insisting the 21-year-old has plenty of room to develop after a mixed start in West London.
Diouf joined the Bees from West Ham United in August in a deal worth £40 million including add-ons, but has found himself competing with Keane Lewis-Potter for a place on the left side of Brentford's defence.
The Senegal international got another chance in Wednesday's Carabao Cup defeat to Sunderland, where he endured a difficult first half as the hosts scored three times in 13 minutes. Andrews has acknowledged the mistakes that contributed to Brentford's exit, although his assessment of Diouf's longer-term prospects remains unchanged.
"He's 21 years old. He's got a very high ceiling. We knew that Malick had a very open mind towards developing his game and improving his individual way of playing. He will only get better for us and he will prove to be a brilliant signing."
Diouf arrived with a full season of Premier League experience behind him, making 32 appearances and providing five assists for West Ham during the 2025/26 campaign, in which they were relegated. The Bees were familiar with his attacking qualities, particularly his willingness to get forward and deliver from wide positions.
He has shown glimpses of that since his move. Against Aston Villa earlier this month, Diouf made his first Premier League start for the Bees and produced an encouraging performance in a 2-2 draw.
He had more touches than any Brentford player with 64, won four tackles and covered the second most distance of any player in the match, also becoming involved in the build-up to Kristoffer Ajer's late equaliser. It was the kind of display that demonstrated why the club had been keen to bring him across London.
Wednesday offered a more difficult experience. Sunderland's second goal came after Jocelin Ta Bi got the better of Diouf on Brentford's left before pulling the ball back for Timur Tutierov to score.
The defender had contributed at the other end earlier in the half, delivering a low cross that Igor Thiago narrowly failed to convert. He also headed the ball back across goal for Callum Wilson shortly before the break, but goalkeeper Melker Ellborg denied the striker from close range.
Diouf played the full match as Brentford lost 3-2, having been brought into the starting XI as part of eight changes made by Andrews.
His opportunities in the Premier League have been more limited. Lewis-Potter has been preferred at left-back for much of the season. However, Rico Henry's latest injury has left Brentford without another established option at left-back until after the November international break.
Andrews spoke about the competition for places when Diouf first arrived, having already used Lewis-Potter and Henry during the opening weeks of the campaign. He was particularly keen on the Senegalese defender's potential to improve, rather than viewing him solely as an immediate replacement for either player.
The Bees signed Diouf on a five-year contract, with an option for another season, showing their investment in the defender’s future.
Diouf had also impressed at Slavia Prague before joining West Ham, helping the Czech club win the league title in 2024/25. His performances earned him international recognition with Senegal, including involvement at the 2026 World Cup.
Competition for his position at Brentford remains, and Wednesday's defeat showed Diouf still has areas to improve. With Henry unavailable, however, Andrews has decisions to make ahead of Saturday's Premier League meeting with Nottingham Forest, where the Senegal international will hope for another opportunity.
