World Sevens Football has revealed further clubs for its London edition at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium, with the tournament field continuing to take shape ahead of May.
The line-up for World Sevens Football’s London edition at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium is continuing to grow, with further clubs now revealed ahead of the three-day tournament in west London.
The initial announcement named Manchester United and Aston Villa, later joined by Tottenham Hotspur Women and West Ham. Everton and London City Lionesses are the latest additions, bringing the competition closer to its planned eight-team line-up for the 28 to 30 May event at Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium.
With Everton and London City now confirmed, six clubs have been named for the tournament so far. That gives the London edition a clearer identity, mixing established Women’s Super League sides with a club still building its profile, and leaves only two places still to be announced before the final line-up is complete. As a result, the focus is beginning to move beyond the launch phase and towards what kind of competitive balance the event could produce once all eight teams are in place.
The tournament is significant for Brentford as hosts as much as for the clubs taking part. The Gtech Community Stadium will stage the first London edition of the seven-a-side event, with all teams coming from the women’s game in England. The event will bring together eight Barclays Women’s Super League sides to the stadium, alongside a festival-style atmosphere across the three days. Hosting the tournament should also provide a commercial boost for the club through ticket sales, matchday income and the wider exposure that comes with staging a new high-profile event at the Gtech Community Stadium.
World Sevens has positioned the event as a fast-format competition, with 7v7 matches played on a reduced natural-grass pitch, 30-minute games and rolling substitutions. Earlier coverage from the organisers also confirmed a $1.5 million prize pot for the London edition, following previous tournaments in Estoril and Fort Lauderdale.
For Brentford, the expanding club list is another sign that the event is gathering momentum. The tournament had already brought attention because of its venue, timing and format, but every additional team announcement adds more shape to what the club hopes will be a high-profile women’s football event at the Gtech. With the field now moving closer to completion, attention will begin to shift from announcements to the draw, scheduling and which players will feature when the tournament arrives in May.
