Kristoffer Ajer appeared to offer the explanation for his Brentford absence after sharing a photo with a newborn baby on Instagram, with the defender's personal update arriving during the club's push for a European place.
Kristoffer Ajer’s absence from Brentford’s matchday squad at Elland Road raised eyebrows on Saturday night, particularly with the Bees heading into an international break. Keith Andrews named Ethan Pinnock and Yehor Yarmoliuk in his starting side for the trip to Leeds, while Mikkel Damsgaard was confirmed unavailable and Dango Ouattara was only fit enough for a place on the bench. Ajer, however, was not involved at all as Brentford played out a goalless draw that left them seventh in the Premier League.
The reason now appears to be a personal one rather than a fitness issue. Norway head coach Ståle Solbakken told reporters on Monday 23 March that Ajer had become a father and had therefore been given extra time before joining the national team camp. Solbakken said the Brentford defender had the day off and would arrive on Tuesday evening in time for training on Wednesday, which neatly explains why he was missing from Brentford’s squad against Leeds.
A social media post that circulated after the weekend also pointed in that direction, but Solbakken’s comments are the clearest explanation yet for why one of Brentford’s more established defenders was absent. That will come as welcome news for Brentford, because it suggests Ajer’s omission was down to family circumstances rather than a fresh injury concern at a point in the season when Andrews can ill afford to lose experienced players at the back.
Ajer remains an important figure in west London. Brentford underlined that in January when the club handed him a new contract through to 2030, with an option for a further year, and Andrews described him at the time as a key presence on and off the pitch. Brentford said then that he had made 16 Premier League appearances in 2025/26, and he has remained a regular option since. Ajer has played in all eight of Norway’s World Cup qualifying matches and is expected to have a significant role for his country this summer.
For Brentford, this isn't the first time this season, with three players now having missed games through the season after welcoming a baby. The timing for Ajer's is at least helpful for the Bees. The Leeds game was the club’s final fixture before the break, which means Ajer now has a short window to deal with a major family moment before attention turns back to club football. Brentford collected a clean sheet and a point without him in Yorkshire, and all the signs now suggest he missed the game for one of the best possible reasons.
