The Nigerian midfielder swaps West London for the CBS Arena after firing Frank Lampard’s side back to the Premier League, ending his three-year stint with the Bees.
Frank Onyeka has completed his permanent move from Brentford to Coventry City for an undisclosed fee.
The Nigerian midfielder first joined Frank Lampard’s team on loan in February. The deal included a clause for a permanent transfer if Coventry earned promotion to the Premier League.
Coventry have now secured promotion, so Onyeka’s transfer has become permanent and the Sky Blues are back in the Premier League.
This move ends Onyeka’s spell at Brentford, where he played 87 games in all competitions.
Onyeka arrived at Brentford from FC Midtjylland in July 2021 as their first signing after reaching the Premier League. He played regularly in their debut top-flight season and helped Thomas Frank’s team finish 13th.
While at Brentford, Onyeka played for Nigeria at the Africa Cup of Nations and came back with a runners-up medal in 2024.
He scored his only goal for Brentford in a match against Sheffield United in April 2024.
Over time, Onyeka’s role at Brentford became smaller. He spent the 2024/25 season on loan at Augsburg, where he played 31 Bundesliga games, before coming back to Brentford last summer.
He played nine times for Brentford in the first half of last season, then moved to Coventry on loan.
The move gave Onyeka more chances to play regularly and helped Coventry add Premier League experience to their squad. He played 14 games for the Sky Blues, scored once, and helped Lampard’s team win the Championship and return to the Premier League after 25 years.
Speaking in Brentford’s announcement Director of Football, Phil Giles, said the transfer was the right decision for all parties.
“Frank has been with us since our first Premier League game, and has always shown fantastic commitment, work rate and loyalty during his time here,” Giles said.
“Ultimately, he probably didn’t start as many games as he’d have liked, which is why the opportunity for him to move to Coventry made sense for all parties.
“He made a big contribution to their promotion and has earned his chance at becoming a regular Premier League starter with them. Frank will always be welcome back at Brentford and we wish him well for next season with Coventry.”
Onyeka played an important role in Brentford’s early Premier League seasons, but now leaves as his opportunities in west London have become limited.
The move gives the midfielder a fresh Premier League challenge.
Brentford will visit Coventry’s CBS Arena for their last game of 2026, and Onyeka could return to Brentford’s Gtech Community Stadium with Coventry in February 2027.
Brentford have settled the future of a player who needed more opportunities, while Coventry have kept a midfielder who played a key part in their promotion.
Onyeka leaves Brentford with everyone’s best wishes and a strong place in the club’s recent history. He joined as Brentford began their Premier League journey, and now moves on as Coventry prepare for their own return to the top division.
