The Seagulls soared to a resounding victory over their arch-rivals Crystal Palace... but what did we learn from yesterdays demolition?
Albion stretched their winning run to six games in a row, demolishing rivals Crystal Palace 5-0 in the process. In one of the games of the season so far, Brighton can walk away ecstatic with their biggest win over Palace since 1956.
Lethal Seagulls are fine without Welbeck
Over the summer, Albion lost their top scorer Danny Welbeck to Chelsea. There was understandable concern with the decision due to the lack of fit strikers at the club, however Babis Kostoulas and the rest of the attack have easily filled the boots of the experienced striker.
Over the course of last season, 20 different Brighton players would find themselves on the scoresheet, with Welbeck bagging 14 and making up over 20% of the team’s goals. After 11 games this season, the Albion have already seen 15 different goalscorers, further enforcing the idea we don’t need Welbeck.
Brighton’s performance against Palace was a perfect example of this. Whilst looking incredibly clinical, Albion had four separate goalscorers. Kostoulas’ linkup play was also key, constantly dropping deep or pushing wide to stretch and disrupt the Palace defence, as seen in the third goal.
Furthermore, Albion’s fifth of the afternoon took them up to six goals from set pieces this Premier League season. This makes them level with Chelsea, also on six. Throughout the entirety of last season, Albion only saw 11 goals from set pieces - the 12th highest in the league.
Diego Gomez is worth his weight in gold
Diego Gomez is rarely given credit by fans and pundits alike; however, his recent performances have been remarkable.
Gomez regularly helps with defensive contributions and is a factor in the Seagulls’ superb defensive record. Furthermore, Gomez never seems to tire, possessing a fantastic work ethic and never giving up. It’s players like Gomez that hold a team like Brighton together, and it’s fantastic to see him get the praise he deserves after such an incredible goal.
Gomez’ confidence seems to be sky high at the moment, and that’s seen in his goal yesterday. After Olivier Boscagli’s quick pass found his feet, Gomez instantly turned round and unleashed a lofted ball over Palace goalkeeper Walter Benitez and into the back of the net. It’s the first halfway line goal Albion fans had seen since Steve Sidwell’s effort in 2016, and the celebrations reflected that.
Gomez isn’t shy to have a go at goal, as his ever-impressive goal catalogue continues to grow for the Albion. Who knows what the future may hold for the Paraguayan!
The Dunk/Vuskovic partnership continues to impress
The blend of experience and youth in Brighton’s defence has contributed massively to the joint best defence in the Premier League. Club legend Lewis Dunk and record signing Luka Vuskovic have only seen five goals end up in the Brighton net this season - and are a driving force to why the Albion have kept four clean sheets in a row.
Vuskovic was the standout of the two yesterday. Having the most touches out of everyone, Vuskovic also played an enormous role in Brighton’s fifth goal. His smart run to the back post caught everyone by surprise, forcing Walter Benitez to parry the ball straight to an unmarked Jack Hinshelwood.
Vuskovic’s defensive actions also massively helped the Seagulls earn a clean sheet. His battle with Palace striker Jorgen Strand Larsen ended in a decisive Vuskovic victory, forcing the striker to be subbed off with half an hour to spare.
