Brighton's "hilarious" dismantling of Chelsea showcased Kadioglu's brilliance and a resurgence of talent. Is Europe on?
Albion see off Chelsea in an absolutely incredible game of football down on the South Coast.
In a game that could only be described as hilarious, the pantomime feeling was in the air straight from kick-off.
What just happened?
Ferdi Kadioglu gave the Seagulls the lead within the first few minutes, and Albion were already good value.
Kadioglu was the outstanding player throughout the game. His tenacity and ability to drive forward were simply too hot to handle for Liam Rosenior’s Chelsea side.
Kadioglu was relentless and, complemented by the likes of Yankuba Minteh and Kaoru Mitoma on the pitch, was super effective.
In the first half, it felt as though the Chelsea players were totally uninterested. Despite Kadioglu’s electric performance, it was Robert Sanchez on the tips of the tongues of Brighton fans going into half-time.
The former Albion goalkeeper and £25 million Chelsea signing had a poor first half.
Every time he kicked the ball off the pitch, the Brighton fans would celebrate it like a goal.
The aforementioned pantomime feeling really did ring true, as “Sanchez again ole ole” rang around the Amex Stadium.
The theme continued into the second half. Jeers towards Rosenior from the Chelsea fans, including an insulting “f**k off Rosenior”, were followed by Brighton fans singing “Liam Rosenior, he’s one of our own!”
Of course, Rosenior spent valuable years down at Brighton, much like many other players and staff employed by the club in Cobham.
With that said, Brighton took full advantage.
Their second half was relentless, and some of the passing moves were much more fluid. Taking the game to Chelsea, and it truly did feel like Fabian Hürzeler’s style of football was finally starting to translate to the pitch on a more regular basis.
The style has been heavily questioned over the course of the season, but Brighton now sit in 6th place in the Premier League on 50 points.
The talk and chants of “Europe again” could even end up being Champions League! If Aston Villa are to win the Europa League, the 6th spot would technically open up for a qualifying position for the top level of European football.
Let’s talk about where they are right now, though. There are four games to go yet, and that feels like a long time at the moment.
Who stood out?
While Kadioglu has had his plaudits, it’d be impossible to ignore the resurgence of Carlos Baleba and Georginio Rutter.
The £75 million duo have spent large portions of their season out of the side, but the last two games have been incredibly reassuring, particularly for Georginio.
Baleba returned to the side today and put on a great display in the traditional way, and at the level you’d expect from the Cameroonian international. Dominating midfield, impressive in duals and reading the game magnificently.
Georginio was equally impressive and a key figure in the game. He earned an assist after a powerful driving run, laying the ball off nicely to Jack Hinshelwood, who scored the vital goal to make it 2-0. Georginio was emphatic all game, and arguably the runner-up for standout pick out of the night for Albion.
Danny Welbeck finished the game off at 3-0; a teasing ball from Maxim De Cuyper eventually fell at the Englishman’s feet, and he slotted home into the top corner to complete the rout.
Welbeck was only on the pitch for a matter of minutes, but his standard and expected goal against Chelsea just felt inevitable! His 13th of the season in the league, equalling Glenn Murray’s record for goals in a single season of Premier League football. England must surely be a matter of time, right?
Overall, Fabian Hürzeler has truly turned it around. Brighton are in contention for serious European football, and a big wave of credit has to be given to the young German head coach.
