The Dutch shot-stopper has evolved into a Premier League powerhouse, anchoring Brighton’s top-four charge with elite shot-stopping and fearless sweeping that has Europe’s biggest clubs on high alert.
Brighton goalkeeper Bart Verbruggen is on another level this season. Signing for the Seagulls in July of 2023 for just £16 million, the Dutch keeper was viewed as one of Europe's top shot-stoppers, and entering his fourth season for the club, he is now showing the ability that he was once viewed to become.
Verbruggen leads the Premier League Golden Glove race, keeping 6 clean sheets in all 9 games, (joint most with Arsenal's David Raya), and extending that to 10 in all competitions. His excellent performances against reigning champions Arsenal, contenders Manchester City, and Europa League Winners Aston Villa, alongside other games, have helped take Albion up to third in the league, just mere points away from the top.
IMAGO / News ImagesOver the past few seasons, he has gained notoriety for both his saving ability, but also his sweeping duties as well, often to be found bravely rushing out of his penalty box, and playing balls in behind the opposition defence. Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all circling the 24 year old, but the Sussex side were able to keep his signature for at least this coming season.
What makes him so special?
Standing at 6 feet and 4 inches (193 centimetres), Verbruggen possesses a strong stature, which helps both physically and mentally.
According to Fotmob, Verbruggen's save percentage in the Premier League this season is 78.8%, ranking him second behind Leeds' James Trafford, while preventing over four expected goals so far. In his previous three seasons with the club, his save percentage has been 69% (23/24), 60% (24/25) and 69% (25/26), which marks a huge improvement in his performances.

Whether he will punch the ball clear from a cross, cover his near/far post or run out to close down the angle, Verbruggen will make the right choice most of the time, giving confidence to his fans, his players, his manager and most importantly, himself. Mental attributes are not able to be coached, and to read the game as Verbruggen does is essential, as other goalkeepers have shown proof of the importance of being aware within the game for all 90 minutes.
As per Fotmob, Verbruggen made 7 saves against Manchester City, totalling to 1.07 xG prevented by his actions alone. Brighton could very easily have lost at the Etihad for the second time that week, but because of his, and his defence's heroics, the Albion claimed another three points.

He has been performing on this level for a while now, guiding the club back to European football after a torrid mid-season, where he remained one of the shining lights in a burned-out team, going to the World Cup in North America, and establishing himself as both Brighton's and the Netherlands' number one goalkeeper.
"I think Bart Verbruggen is the best goalkeeper in the league"
What lies ahead for Verbruggen?
As mentioned earlier, clubs such as Bayern Munich, Real Madrid and Barcelona were all eyeing up a move for the Dutchman, but no official bid was ever made. It's also hard to imagine that he would say no to a move to a more prominent club, with his prime years coming up and Tony Bloom's philosophy of making as much money as he can. Having proven his quality on the biggest of stages, it would make sense that he can perform abroad, possibly making an even stronger name for himself as well.
With a current market value on Transfermarkt of €40 million, the expected fee is more likely going to be around double that figure, especially considering the excellent World Cup and start to this season that he is having.

Brighton's upcoming fixtures of an away trip to Getafe, before hosting recent rivals Brentford, before an international break, will show how the club aims with being able to continue to compete on all fronts. It will also show the world further on how good Bart Verbruggen is, as he wants to prove the top clubs that he is their man for the future.
Brighton are still in with an outside chance of winning the Premier League, with European football looking appealing yet again, and remain heavy favourites to win the Conference League, a competition he has yet to concede a goal in wearing Albion colours, and will be looking to keep that going against Getafe on Thursday.
With his name being sung and ringing around the AMEX, Verbruggen will definitely be feeling well loved by Brighton fans, and will certainly hope to repay them across the season with more of the same top performances he has provided this season.
