From record-breaking fees to scorpion-kick goals, Hamburg insider Fiago reveals how Croatia’s towering defensive prodigy will revolutionise Brighton’s backline following his sensational move from Tottenham.
Brighton and Hove Albion completed the record-breaking transfer of Luka Vuskovic from Tottenham Hotspur this summer.
Regarded as one of the hottest prospects in Europe, the Croatian defender made the Bundesliga Team of the Season last season while on loan at HSV Hamburg.
Fiago Reveals All
We caught up with Fiago, a multi-platform content creator and big Hamburg fan, to see what he thinks about his big move to the Amex this summer:
"As an HSV fan, I‘m happy Luka has gone somewhere his talent will be appreciated instead of staying at Tottenham.
He is the greatest player we’ve seen in Hamburg at least since Heung Min-Son. At 18 years of age, he came for the love of his brother, but he won the hearts of the entire city. At 193 cm (6.3ft) tall, the way he dominates the air is unbelievable.
He became the first player in the top 5 leagues in 5 years to win 18 aerial duels in a single match, finished his rookie Bundesliga season with the highest duel rate (69.1%), and even scored the most goals by a defender (6), including a scorpion-kick winner in the derby vs Werder Bremen."
The final piece here, perhaps being the most exciting of the bunch. A scorpion kick winner in a derby? Consider me invested. Could you imagine the scenes at Selhurst Park this season?
When asked about his accolades and weaknesses, he not only explained how significant he was to the side but also to the league's standards:
2x Rookie of the Month. Mid-season player of the year. Team of the season. All whilst playing for a newly promoted side.
His positioning, ball distribution, heading, and vision are unbelievable.
Weaknesses? Maybe his acceleration isn’t the greatest given his physique, but he usually makes up for it with positioning. A few times, his passing under pressure has been sloppy, but that will improve with experience.
The boy is 19. You guys are getting a future Top 3 defender in the world if you treat him right."
A very reassuring insight from someone who has watched him extensively over recent times, and it seems as though he could fit the Seagulls like a glove.
How could he fit in at Brighton?
Perhaps one of the standout factors in Vuskovic's impact at the club is how long he could be at Brighton for. Signing a new 5-year deal while the Seagulls are set to lose a gulf of experience within the side, it seems as though his natural leadership qualities could be invaluable to the team not only now, but into the future too.
It is important to note Vuskovic is only 19, and at that age, very few have a background as he does. It is very rare to see the Seagulls break the bank for a player, but Tony Bloom must understand an opportunity when he sees one.
When considering that Jan Paul Van Hecke has left the club as part of the deal (unofficially), it feels appropriate to consider him a direct replacement, despite having very different playing styles.
The drawbacks were the mentions of his lack of pace. Albion have been very used to having 'slow' players. Both Van Hecke and Lewis Dunk have never been blessed with pace, nor is Pascal Struijk.
If Fabian Hürzeler insists on playing a high line, Albion could still be prone to being caught out on the break.
Conceivably, the benefits are far superior to the drawbacks in this situation, though. Albion's big issues were with box defending. Brighton often made mistakes on the ball, were 'architects of their own downfall', and let the ball bounce across the box in dangerous circumstances.
The introduction of Vuskovic should hopefully add an element of composure and physicality to this issue.
