Fabian Hürzeler’s side dominated Kauno Zalgiris in a clinical European display, fueled by Georginio Rutter’s brace and masterful midfield control from rising star Malick Yalcouyé.
Brighton and Hove Albion continue their surging start in their 2026/27 season with a fantastic 4-0 win over Kauno Zalgiris.
Let’s be honest, there was absolutely no competition to battle with here, but what a performance from start to finish from Fabian Hürzeler’s side.
It feels like a seamless start that continues to get better for the young German head coach.
Considering the uproar that he went through last season, the way the turnaround has been officially completed over the last seven months. There were genuine thoughts over him being sacked at Brighton, incredible.
Goals from Jack Hinshelwood, a Georginio Rutter brace, and a rare Matt O’Riley finish sealed a comfortable night for the Seagulls.
Georginio started the game magnificently. Pressing, driving at the defenders, and finishing off his chances well. He also grabbed an impressive assist for Hinshelwood’s goal.
The Frenchman mentioned consistency in his post match interview being important, and that is one thing that he and Albion have brought into the European competition.
Their good form of winning games has continued in a new competition on the first time of asking.
Who stood out the most?
Malick Yalcouyé and Pascal Groß are the Roundtable pickouts of the night, though. Both players at polar ends of their careers were emphatic from start to finish, but equally strong in controlling the tempo of games, breaking lines with passes and creating big opportunities to add more goals to the result.
Yalcouyé’s pass from midfield led to a beautifully worked third, which was finished off by Georginio. Ibrahim Osman’s assist, equally as clinical as the end result.
Osman had a brilliant run out today, electric, willing to take on his man at every opportunity and tried to create chances no matter how they could come about.
A fearless performance! He wasn’t the only Albion Ibrahim to contribute to an assist either, as former Blackburn forward Younes Ibrahim popped up with a great assist for O’Riley’s close range header, an immediate impact for the highly rated youngster.
Overall, a huge credit goes to the head coach again. Hürzeler has found a system that works for the whole squad, and no matter who is deployed into the first team, the ‘togetherness’ and good vibes now match the overall performances.
A high intensity, good in possession, and even strong pragmatism has been displayed in the early stages of this season so far.
These are the good times Albion fans, my best advice at this stage, is to truly enjoy it. Up the Albion.
