Fabian Hürzeler’s tactical evolution shines as the resilient Seagulls ground the champions, showcasing a ruthless new mentality, defensive grit, and the squad depth to sustain a title charge.
Brighton and Hove Albion continued an incredible start to the Premier League season with a record-breaking 1-0 victory over Manchester City this afternoon.
Albion will feel like they have learned a lot from their recent performances, as Fabian Hürzeler's side finds themselves in the top three of the Premier League so far. But how much have we learned from this win today? More of the same, or is this something new for the Seagulls?
Here are five things we learned from this afternoon's fixture...
1. Albion can win ugly as well as play well.
We have already seen it in glimpses so far this season. Fabian Hürzeler has shown that he has adapted his style of play. The wins against Arsenal and Sunderland couldn't be more different, and once again we have seen an 'ugly' win.
2. Mentality and togetherness are going hand in hand
Hürzeler has spoken about 'togetherness' for a long time, but it seems to be bearing fruit for the Seagulls now. Every player is sticking together to build a real, tangible winning culture at the club right now.
Big performances across the pitch, and the Albion's seem fluid and adaptive. On top of this, they are all pushing towards the same goal, adding a newfound ruthlessness and a stronger mentality than shown in the past. The ball is kept out of the net, rather than feeling inevitable that the game would be thrown away!
3. Hadjam is looking like a shrewd signing
The Algerian left-back had another fine cameo for the Seagulls. Off the bench, Hadjam changed the game in all honesty. Olivier Boscagli didn't have his best game defensively, but Hadjam totally limited Ndiaye and the City attackers on the Albion left side.
Not only that, but Hadjam supplied a lot going forward for the Seagulls too. He linked up very well with Malick Yalcouyé and Georginio Rutter to offer an out ball from the Albion low block.
4. Game management and substitutions are well timed and professional.
Fabian Hürzeler previously had a past issue of not seeing out games and feeling like decision-making during games could be questionable. Whether it be his in-game tactical switches, substitutions, or style of play.
Albion no longer play in 'patches'. They are adaptive, controlled, and measured on and off the ball. The expansive style is able to switch to a conventional style without surrendering control of the game.
5. Costinha has learned from his mistakes!
Wow, what a performance from the Portuguese full-back! While he was beaten at times by Jeremy Doku, you can expect that against one of the league's finest forwards.
Costinha has learned from his Anfield cameo and seemingly improved with his one-on-one defending today. Both games against Manchester City have seen him step up well to the task, and that is a commendable asset to Hürzeler's side during a period of losing Ferdi Kadioglu.
