Fabian Hürzeler navigates a persistent injury crisis as the Seagulls travel north, missing key stars like Kaoru Mitoma while facing a resilient, counter-attacking Sunderland side.
Brighton and Hove Albion will return to Premier League action this weekend with the short trip to the top of the country to face Sunderland.
Brighton Confirmed Team News...
Fabian Hürzeler has confirmed his team news in todays press conference, but it may leave fans feeling rather flat after the extended break.
It is mostly as we were before the restart, as Kaoru Mitoma, Femi Azeez, Evan Ferguson, Stefanos Tzimas, Yankuba Minteh, and Mats Wieffer remain out.
Mitoma is supposedly edging closer to a return, as Hürzeler has referred to this morning, but there remains to be no update so far.
However, Jack Hinshelwood will be assessed late, while Yasin Ayari is back available. Hürzeler has explained there is no fresh injury worries from the 13 players who were on international break, Ayari had a virus during the break with Sweden.
The question over Azeez remains as fans were told he had a two week injury after his arrival from Millwall on the final day of the transfer window. Five weeks later the winger remains out.
As we all know, the fact that the head coach has confirmed the team news, an imaginary prize to who predicts the mystery injury this weekend...!
However, things could be different against Sunderland.
Away from home, the Black Cats are typically strong on the ball and look to counter attack a press, which could work in their favour. If the Seagulls are to take the game to Sunderland, they will want to score fairly quickly and avoid starting the game slowly like they did at Stamford Bridge.
How do things look for the opposition?
Regis Le Bris has confirmed that Dan Ballard, Brian Brobbey, Romaine Mundle, and Habib Diarra are all set to miss the tough game at the Stadium of Light.
It is likely that Sunderland will look to play a lower block, before trying to beat the press if the Seagulls elect to start on the front foot.
Perhaps the reassuring factor for Brighton is their lack of striking presence and absence of Ballard, who has started the season very strongly. Le Bris is a very adaptive head coach, and tends to rotate between both extreme styles of play, which could make for an intriguing encounter between both he and Hürzeler.
Sunderland have started the season reasonably, and considering their push in the Europa League this season, which kicks off next week!
