Summer signings Jaouen Hadjam and Joao Costinha have received plenty of plaudits after the double-header away at Manchester City. Could they challenge for regular starting spots?
Albion's new defensive duo largely kept City’s star attackers Jeremy Doku, Iliman Ndiaye and Phil Foden quiet in Saturday's 1-0 win.
The Algerian left back earned his flowers for stellar attacking contribution in the narrow Carabao Cup defeat last Wednesday, whilst his defensive display off the bench at the weekend proved that he can be a great asset at either end.
Costinha stood up to the tall task of deputising for Ferdi Kadioğlu, and earned a spot in the starting eleven at the expense of returning Mats Wieffer, who was brought on for a once in a blue moon midfield appearance.
Have Brighton found a permanent fullback pairing long term?
The Seagulls current defensive options are a really good headache to have for Fabian Hürzeler, with the club already deep in juggling European football.
Despite arriving from a lower-quality league in Switzerland, it’s been a surprise as to just how well-rounded Hadjam has looked. Not only has he hardly put a foot wrong defensively, but his ball carrying up the left flank has been a real asset, and you only have to see his two assists in the cup to see what he provides going forward.
As for Costinha, he faced some scrutiny early doors but has adapted quickly. His energy is similarly impressive, and his recovery pace equally so when faced up against one of the most dynamic wingers in Europe on Saturday.
Brighton travel to Spain tonight to take on a notoriously sound defensive unit in Getafe. Quality wing-backs can be key in breaking down a low block, with the quality and choice of pass imperative. Brighton will play a lot of defensive oriented teams in Europe, so having different solutions to bypass them is key.
Hadjam was arguably the brightest spark of a lacklustre away performance in Czechia, and given he was a substitute at the weekend, it’s expected that he’ll be involved in Madrid.
Where does this leave Kadioğlu and Wieffer?
The strong performances from our newest full-backs don’t necessarily spell disaster for our usual starters. Both Kadioğlu and Wieffer can play in multiple positions, and they are some of the first names on the team sheet when both are fit.
That said, it’s good to have a bit of competition for places in the team. Especially with the calendar the way it is.
In the grand scheme of our summer transfer window, it’s great to see signings made from ‘Brightony’ leagues performing at such a high standard already. With all of the headlines Luka Vuskovic is making, it’s easy to forget how great our window as a whole actually was.
