A standout defender, player of the season favorite, and heir to leadership roles. Will Jan Paul Van Hecke's stellar performances lead him away from Brighton?

According to multiple reports in the last few weeks, it is becoming increasingly likely that Jan Paul Van Hecke will leave Brighton at the end of this season.

Van Hecke is likely to be named the Brighton and Hove Albion fans’ choice for their player of the season, after yet another stellar season, following up on his double pick last year.

The Flying Dutchman could have a World Cup to remember, with the Netherlands squad looking to kick on after a disappointing season for Virgil Van Dijk. There is always room for an heir to the throne!

Van Hecke is the ultimate modern-day defender. He can defend, put in last-ditch challenges, read the game well, and is arguably one of the best passers and crossers at the club. His technique on the ball is fantastic, and he is the manager's dream for a top professional.

Much like a few players heading into the summer, it appears as though Van Hecke’s reluctance to sign a new deal and run down his contract is looming over the club massively.

His performances have been exceptional this season. The standout in most games, and even with Albion’s up-and-down performances and defensive record, Van Hecke tends to be the player tidying up the mess.

As a player who has been growing with the squad since 2022, it feels like we’ve truly been able to see him grow at the club. Now, the 25-year-old is undoubtedly a leader at the club, with fans and even head coach Fabian Hürzeler likening him to being the ‘future captain’ of the club.

It is understandable for him to look for a big move. Ultimately, this is the Brighton way. Reports suggest they will look to recoup £50 million on the defender, with his previous club … having a 7.5% sell-on clause.

The appeal of staying to become the future of a club is less enticing than it used to be. With that being said, the Seagulls are right within contention for European qualification, after a dramatic turn of results for Hürzeler’s men.

Clubs like Chelsea (who would’ve guessed), Tottenham and clubs in Europe are said to be interested in the move, with that list expected to build as the season comes to a close. With that being said, Chelsea may be unlikely to be able to afford him this summer with their financial situation in mind, per David Ornstein.

One thing is for sure: Van Hecke is pushing the top bracket of fan-loved players at the club, and a move to Chelsea would feel like a bitter pill to swallow. His importance both on and off the pitch has become immeasurable, and one of the rare modern players with a great connection to his fanbase. Always the first to come over on an away day!

Van Hecke’s absence from a club perspective would prove to be a great miss, as Brighton continue to sell their top talents year upon year.

While the profits and sustainability reports may like us, the ultimate proof will be in the success it brings on the pitch for fans!

Losing him will require a big new signing, who can hit the ground running both technically and mentally at the club and with the fans alike.
