Despite a tough loss, Baleba showcased glimpses of his superstar potential, driving play and unleashing powerful shots. A complete midfielder emerging from the shadows.

Brighton and Hove Albion struggled to return to form despite a long five days off gifted by boss Fabian Hürzeler.

However, the difficult game away from home could have been expected before the game, as Newcastle United simply had to return to form in order to escape the drop.

It looks like that fate could be sealed for either West Ham or Tottenham or West Ham. The Hammers were hammered away at Brentford.

The struggle wasn't for the whole starting eleven for Brighton, though. Carlos Baleba had another reasonable game for the Seagulls, despite the ugly 3-1 scoreline.

The Cameroonian international has now had two good games in succession, despite struggling for form throughout the course of the season. We were able to see just why he was given the hefty £100 million+ price tag last summer, with a strong shooting ability in the first half, and an effort that even hit the bar early doors.

Baleba's ability to drive through midfield whilst breaking up the play has been his best asset since arriving at Brighton in 2023. The £30 million signing from Lille was always likened to being a successor for former Brighton man, Moisés Caicedo. The Ecuadorian was sold to Chelsea for a British transfer record figure, and many Albion fans foresaw a similar future for Baleba.

Why that has broken down this season will never be truly known, but to go from being a relatively unknown quantity to being touted for big moves to Manchester United must surely take its toll on a young player.

With that in mind, he was definitely Albion's best player today at St James' Park. That familiar work ethic, strong challenges, and ability to make something happen were there for all to see.

He could prove to be a vital player for Hürzeler's side to break into the European spots before the end of the season, with already-relegated Wolves and Leeds still to play.

Baleba's profile would suit Brighton well, alongside players like Pascal Groß and Yasin Ayari, if he were able to play a more regular role.

The Seagulls were noticeably lighter in midfield after he was substituted off, which inevitably led to the third goal, sealing Newcastle's fate.

It would be safe to say he has become an underrated player considering his season not panning in the way he initially expected, but under a head coach who knows how to truly get the best out of him, he could become one of the best midfielders in the world.

Ultimately, this is a player who can defend, receive the ball, turn in and out of trouble, and score goals. A complete midfielder, just waiting to explode on the global scene.
