After dazzling the Bundesliga with electric performances for Leipzig, the prolific German youngster faces an uncertain future as Albion weigh European depth against another high-profile temporary exit.
RB Leipzig could look to bring Brighton forward, Brajan Gruda, back on another loan next season, according to BILD.
Gruda has had an interesting loan spell, and the initial decision was met with fans being very unsure. The exciting young German has scored some vital goals for Leipzig since his arrival in January, including a last-minute curling effort into the top corner against Wolfsburg.
He is known for his dramatic goals. At the beginning of the season, Gruda rounded James Trafford to beat Manchester City incredibly. The Seagulls were strong in that second half, and Gruda was a key player.
Most recently, Gruda was awarded 'Man of the Match' in Leipzig's game against Hoffenheim. The 21-year-old was electric from the beginning, scoring two and grabbing a brilliant assist.
Gruda's knack of being in the right place at the right time has helped him with these goals, but most significantly is his technical ability. Quick feet and strong going forward. Albion fans saw glimpses of this, but unfortunately, it was cut short with the agreement for a loan.
Leipzig want to keep Gruda, but are unlijkely to match the price tag set by Brighton. Only a couple of years ago, Albion spent around £25 million to sign him from Mainz. They will look to at least recoup that figure if they were to sanction a move.
The more likely scenario in Leipzig's minds would be to attempt an additional loan move for next season.
Does it make any sense for Brighton?
If the Seagulls are to achieve European football next season, which is looking increasingly likely, letting go of a talented young player like Gruda would be a confusing move. A sale would seem 'impossible', and a loan would feel somewhat close to it.
Gruda's qualities clearly shine in the Bundesliga, and while that transition to Premier League football isn't easy, the idea of allowing a top talent to leave and halt his progression at the club wouldn't sit right. Gruda could easily be a key player for Fabian Hürzeler's side in tough European fixtures. He could be able to showcase his skillset more effectively, and most importantly, guide the Seagulls further than they have ever been.
Additionally, squad depth. This has been an ongoing issue for many clubs that achieve European football, and was a key reason why Roberto De Zerbi's tenure looked bad on paper in his second season. The depth required to compete in Europe is substantial, and that depth needs to be players who are capable of making a difference on the pitch.
Many teams that make European football without that strength in depth tend to struggle in the league and cups, which can lead to a lot of bad injuries. Albion witnessed this first-hand in 2023/24.
They will not want to make the same mistakes, and unless there are more incoming signings for Albion this summer, a loan wouldn't make sense for them. Brighton are historically the club to want to progress their young players to become top stars, and fans will hope to see the same treatment for a signing who was once labelled a 'dream'.
