The Dutch defender’s contract standoff could trigger a high-stakes move to North London, as Roberto De Zerbi targets his former award-winning protégé to fortify the Spurs backline.
Tottenham Hotspur have been linked to intensifying their interest in Jan Paul Van Hecke from Brighton at the end of this season, according to TeamTalk.
Spurs look rejuvenated under former Albion head coach Roberto De Zerbi, and links towards the Seagulls’ best players who previously played under him could become a common occurrence.
Van Hecke has had another standout campaign at Brighton and is looking increasingly unlikely to renew his contract. The Dutchman has a big opportunity to shine at this year’s World Cup in the USA, and at only 25 years old, has the potential to be a breakout star.
Why does De Zerbi want him?
The defender broke through under De Zerbi at Brighton in 2023, and Albion have never looked back since.
At the time, his future at the Amex was largely up in the air. Lewis Dunk and Levi Colwill were the main defenders at the time, and Albion even had multiple bids rejected for Colwill. This would’ve left Van Hecke’s future elsewhere, but as it happens, the Colwill deal fell through.
His impact since then has been nothing short of incredible. Van Hecke won Fans’ and Players’ player of the season awards last year, and could look to repeat a similar process at this season’s awards.
Spurs have looked much improved under De Zerbi. The Italian is the first manager from the last four to be able to achieve that sort of positive reaction amongst the squad. Numerous reports suggest the players are very happy under their new boss, and even have players like Micky Van De Ven second-guessing a departure this summer.
Spurs will need a secondary defender, with Romero’s links to leave the club intensifying. The captain has had a poor disciplinary record this season.
De Zerbi bringing in a player whom he has already brought the best out of in the past makes a lot of sense. Van Hecke’s deal expires in 2027, and with the clock ticking down, Albion may look to sell before his value is made insignificant.
If he is to go to Tottenham, you’d expect him to hit the ground running. Perhaps, of all sides, this would be one that fits him the best. An all-round centre half, the Dutch defender can play as a ball-playing defender, combined with the traditional last-ditch defending you’d want to see. From crunching challenges to calculated interceptions.
He is also exceptionally good at bursting forward and into midfield positions. De Zerbi even started him in midfield for Brighton in the past! His crossing and ball-playing ability is one of the best amongst the squad, as his ball-striking capabilities are equally as high. This makes him a very dangerous opponent in offensive areas.
Finally, his leadership has been the key to Brighton this season. Often helping the Seagulls in very tough moments.
While a move makes sense, he suits the club magnificently well. There is always a risk of taking a plunge into the unknown.
