Fabian Hürzeler must overhaul his tactical approach following a devastating injury to his star winger. From Ferdi Kadioglu’s versatility to Solly March’s return, several intriguing solutions await.
Kaoru Mitoma was left close to tears as he went down with a nasty injury in the second half against Wolves last weekend.
Many media outlets have suggested the possibility of missing the World Cup with Japan, but while that is unverified, it is unfair to make a judgment. Simply, I want to wish Kaoru all the very best in his recovery.
In the meantime, trying to understand what Albion are likely to do without him doesn't leave them short of options.
Kadioglu on the right-wing?
The likely scenario is a simple switch to the right-wing for Ferdi Kadioglu.
The versatile Turkish international has played on the advanced right side for the Seagulls on numerous occasions and tends to play well. In fact, when he first joined the club, this is how his first goal was scored against Liverpool at Anfield! Kadioglu has a strong ball-striking ability and is good at running into space.
He can be regularly one of the most advanced Albion players on the pitch, even if he is technically a right or left-back. His bombing forward and inverting into space make him a very dangerous and technical opponent.
This would likely see a switch to the left for Yankuba Minteh, along with Maxim De Cuyper
Versatility is a key part of most of the players across the Albion squad, and even more so in a Fabian Hürzeler system.
Maxim De Cuyper would probably be at left-back, with Joel Veltman on the right.
De Cuyper on the left-wing?
Another option would see De Cuyper occupy the left wing.
We have seen the Belgian contribute to goals, including both of his assists against Wolves in his last game. His crossing ability is a dangerous part of his game, and that can prove to be handy against a tough Leeds side this weekend.
Additionally, De Cuyper is a good box crasher. Because of his ball-striking ability, we have seen the Belgian pop up with goals like his effort against Nottingham Forest. A ghosted run into the 12-yard area, delicately placed into the bottom corner.
De Cuyper has arguably had a better season in advanced positions at Brighton, and defensively can be very prone to mistakes and being beaten easily. A switch to the left-wing could prove to be a good move for Hürzeler.
How about an old familiar face?
Solly March returned to the Amex turf in a great moment against Wolves last weekend. The local hero was greeted with a large ovation across the stadium.
While his fitness will need to be monitored, March has fought his way back into the squad in impressive fashion, despite his rotten luck since 2023.
His ability is unquestioned, and with limited minutes off the bench, he could prove to still have a vital part to play in achieving European qualification for Brighton for the second time. In 2022/23, when Brighton did it the first time, the man from Hailsham was instrumental in their season and was one of the most improved players under Roberto De Zerbi.
He was one of the most dangerous wingers in the league during this period, and even a glimpse of that quality is enough to create a good opportunity.
