Brighton target Said El Mala's electrifying Bundesliga form sparks £40M+ transfer chase, but will Premier League's tight defenses expose his game?
Brighton and Hove Albion have been known for finding the next hidden gems and generating noise around some of the more 'niche' players in world football.
A tagline that has followed signings upon signings, and probably hasn't helped their case with finding young players at an affordable price!
Albion have been labelled as 'frontrunners' in the media for Said El Mala for the last few months. Köln will face a tough battle this summer to retain his services, as the noise has woken up clubs like Liverpool, Newcastle, and Chelsea etc to his services.
Who actually is Said El Mala? Is he worth it?
El Mala is a 19-year-old winger, playing in the Bundesliga for Köln, or Cologne in English. His 10 league goals and direct power forward have opened the eyes of many big clubs across Europe.
Statistically, the German winger is the most direct in the world, as of January 2026. Albeit with a small sample size of evidence, his shots per 90 and dribbling efficiency are incredibly high. A self-sufficient winger who can create his own opportunities.
His drawbacks are in the space needed for him to be productive. As we all know, in the Premier League, having a lot of space is something that does not happen. Players are very clever, and so are coaches. If players are needing too much space, they will quickly be found out and limited. This is a key difference between the Bundesliga and English top-flight.
On top of this, because he is self-sufficient, he isn't a 'creator' as such. More of a player to create a chance to shoot on site. This can be very exciting to watch, but also ineffective. He has been one of the most productive goal scorers in the Bundesliga this season, but translating that to the Premier League is a big jump.
A home example of that step up would be Brajan Gruda, who was a £25 million arrival in 2024 at Brighton, but his brilliance is limited in a tougher league.
Time will tell.
His next move is set to be his 'big' one, and both club and player are reportedly not panicking at this stage.
Brighton have previously emerged as favourites, but after their £35 million bid was rejected this week, the price tag is putting the Seagulls off from pursuing the deal. Köln have insisted upon figures upwards of €50 million to secure him this summer.
Brighton haven't been known to be pushed in negotiations for players out of their price range, and whether they'd be right to sit this one out will all be found out in the future.
