After expecting to lose key players in its defensive line, this German giant wants to bring back a Chelsea player who had a brief but successful spell at the club.
Borussia Dortmund is already planning for next season with a name on the table: Aaron Anselmino, 20. According to a report by the newspaper Bild, the German club's sporting directors are closely following the defender's steps, who left an indelible mark at Signal Iduna Park despite his short stay.
The right-footed defender needed just 10 matches to win over the Dortmund crowd before Chelsea, the club that owns his rights, decided to break his loan to send him to Racing Strasbourg. That departure was a hard blow for both the player and the German club.
However, his time in France is not going as expected due to a thigh injury and limited playing time, with just 15 minutes in Ligue 1. Niko Kovac, BVB's coach, is keeping an eye on him while the club studies how to bring him back permanently.
Anselmino's contractual situation is complex, as he has a contract at Stamford Bridge until 2031. Despite the β¬16.5 million investment that the Londoners made to take him from Boca Juniors, the Argentine has not debuted for the Blues and does not seem to be in the immediate plans of the English team.
Borussia Dortmund is seriously considering making a permanent transfer offer this summer to fill the hole in the heart of its defense. The German club trusts that Chelsea will agree to negotiate a sale if the player pushes to return to a place where he feels important.
An exit move in London could make things easier for Dortmund, which needs reliable, young players for its project. Anselmino knows the house and the system and has the full backing of the coaching staff to lead the defense next season.
However, Chelsea's recent actions could hint that the negotiation would not be easy for the Germans, who already saw how the Blues "snatched away" the player who was their starting defender a few months ago. Unfortunately, that decision hurt the player, as mentioned earlier, his time in France has been very complicated.
Surely during this summer transfer window, Anselmino's destination will be known: whether he stays in France to earn a starting role at Strasbourg, whether Chelsea decides to bring him to London and thus save itself the trouble of looking for a central defender on the market, or whether it allows him to go to Germany again, either via a sale or another loan.
