Chelsea joins the race for Werder Bremen's young defender, Karim Coulibaly, and will have to compete with clubs like Manchester United and PSG.
The season is not over yet, but the teams are already starting to move their pieces in the transfer market. Chelsea appears to be in search of a reliable center back, following the possible departure of Wesley Fofana, according to various sources.
The curious thing here is that the club would be interested in securing the services of one of the youngest center-backs in the Bundesliga; we are talking about Werder Bremen's left-sided defender, Karim Coulibaly.
The young German center back, 18, has caught the attention of several clubs after his recent season in Werder Bremen's defense. Valued for his composure, rarely seen in players his age when playing out with the ball under control. Impressive speed, clocking 33 km/h this season.
As well as a height of 1.90 meters, which makes him very reliable for both aerial and ground duels. Various media outlets mention that if his maturation process as a footballer is respected, he could reach a level similar to that of Gabriel (Arsenal) and become one of the best left-footed centre-backs in the world.
Related to the player, Werder Bremen's sporting director, Peter Niemeyer, said the following: "There is movement around this personnel matter, but currently there are no indications of what the next steps might be or whether this will happen in the summer. It is clear, of course, that a player with this profile attracts great interest and a lot of attention."
But the question here is: does Chelsea really need an 18-year-old center back? Many critics mention that one of the club's main problems currently is its lack of experienced players who can steer the ship.
The team does not have a Lampard, Terry, or Cech who can provide security and knowledge to the other players across all lines. So, a center back with very little experience in professional football is likely not the best option for Chelsea.
It is estimated that the German club would put a price on him of around €50 million, since, in addition to Chelsea, teams like Manchester United, PSG, Newcastle, Napoli, and Marseille are also monitoring the player's situation with the intention of bringing him to their ranks.
