A Chelsea icon is close to buying a League Two club for €14 million, to make it competitive. The club currently sits in mid-table, far from any realistic promotion push.

Colchester confirms advanced talks with an investment group for its sale. The offer, valued at £14 million, has John Terry, a five-time Premier League champion with Chelsea, as its central figure, who could attend the match against Accrington Stanley on Tuesday. If finalized, Terry will control transfers, roster, and technical appointments, Telegraph Sport reports.

Although the legendary center back has not yet spoken publicly, the Community Stadium's management has acknowledged that the deal is close to being closed. This transition could leverage Terry's experience at Chelsea's youth academy to facilitate future loan agreements for the Essex team.

Referring to the ongoing negotiations, owner Robbie Cowling issued a statement: "Colchester United is holding detailed discussions with a consortium regarding a proposed sale of the club. For now, we cannot comment on individuals or companies involved.

Further details will only be given when the transaction is fully completed and all procedures have been finalized. My priority is to ensure that any decision regarding the future ownership of the club is the best for Colchester United, its fans, and its long-term success."

Terry, a club management graduate, has long aspired to a leadership role. In 2023, Telegraph Sport reported that he evaluated buying a 10% stake in Chelsea through a consortium led by tech entrepreneur Harley Kisberg with fan investment. Although the plan did not materialize, his move to an operational role at Colchester follows the trend of prominent figures investing in lower divisions to grow professionally.

The imminent arrival of this iconic figure comes as the team looks to solidify a stable season, sitting in 13th place in League Two with 60 points from 42 matches. Danny Cowley's men face a demanding schedule to close the campaign, and this experience could be vital for future signings. Once the procedures are finalized, the key will be whether his experience turns Colchester into promotion contenders next season.

Let us remember that John Terry is not only a Chelsea legend but also one of the former footballers who has been most successful in amassing a fortune after his retirement. With an estimated net worth of around £50 million, the former England center back is about to take the next step: participating in the acquisition of Colchester United for approximately £14 million.

Terry's fortune originated during his brilliant career at Chelsea. At the time, he was one of the best-paid players in the Premier League, earning around £135,000 per week in 2007.

Throughout his career at Chelsea and Aston Villa, Terry earned a total of between £72 million and £78 million in salaries, of which approximately £40 million corresponded to net income after taxes.
