With Chelsea having an astonishing 25 players out on loan, success stories are being written but development of hopeful stars for the future hit crossroads.
It was another busy summer at Stamford Bridge, with a high volume of player turnover, especially in the loan department.
Chelsea currently have 25 players out on loan, a number that is bound to bring both success stories and loans that ultimately prove unsuccessful.
The Blues have largely used the loan system as an easy route to offload players who have been deemed surplus to requirements. The most notable example is Raheem Sterling, who, on the eve of the 2024/25 season, was deemed unwanted by Enzo Maresca, the Chelsea head coach at the time.
Current examples include Axel Disasi, who has had three different loan spells in the last three seasons, as Chelsea have never been able to secure a suitable permanent offer for the defender. Robert Sanchez, who until recently was viewed as the club’s ‘number one’ goalkeeper, was loaned to Como as Xabi Alonso sanctioned the signing of Emi Martinez from Aston Villa in a £7 million move with under a week left in the transfer window.
The loan system hasn’t just been used by the Blues to offload unwanted players; it has also been used to assist the development of future stars. Academy prospects Reggie Walsh and Ryan Kavuma-McQueen are thriving at Wigan and Portsmouth, respectively, while teenage sensation and Kazakhstan international Dastan Satpayev has hit the ground running for Burnley.
While many loans bring success stories, unfortunately, some don’t work out, and that currently seems to be the case for Jesse Derry. The 19-year-old joined Chelsea’s academy last year from Crystal Palace and, within a year, found himself involved with the first team.
The next stage of the player’s development was to go out and gain valuable first-team experience in the hope of being ready to make it at Stamford Bridge. Earlier in the summer, Derry joined Portuguese side Sporting CP, a move that was touted as perfect for the English teenager, which was further backed up by strong involvement in pre-season.
Unfortunately, the opportunities handed to him during preparations for the season failed to translate into regular first-team football. Sporting have played eight matches in all competitions so far this season and currently sit third in the league.
The Chelsea loanee has struggled severely for game time. Following the latest round of matches, he has now spent four consecutive games as an unused substitute. In total, Derry has played just 27 minutes across three matches and sat on the bench for the other five.
Derry will be hoping that a change of scenery with England’s Under-20 squad will get him some much-needed minutes. The Young Lions are due to take on Italy, France and Germany in the Euro Elite League during September and October. Sporting return to action on October 9 as they take on Braga in Liga Portugal.
