According to reports from the British media, Chelsea are showing a strong interest in signing a player also wanted by Newcastle and Man United.
The summer ahead for Chelsea feels like a huge one under new manager Xabi Alonso, with it being pointed out a number of times how his official title is 'manager' rather than head coach, with that being seen as an implication that he will have at least some control over transfers this summer.
We have already seen the club linked with his former Bayer Leverkusen midfielder, Granit Xhaka, which is a big sign that he will be allowed to sign who he wants within reason, as that one is almost certainly being driven by Alonso himself rather than the club.
Well, earlier on today, it was reported by David Ornstein that Sunderland had knocked down a big of eight million pounds for the Swiss international, and would not be entertaining any bids no matter the value.
This could in turn see Chelsea look for other midfield options. Well, that could certainly be the case as according to English media outlet teamtalk, Chelsea are showing an interest in signing Borussia Dortmund and Germany national team midfielder, Felix Nmecha.
They report that, despite interest from Newcastle United, he will not be going there this summer, whilst English Premier League sides Chelsea and Manchester United are showing an interest in his services.
Meanwhile, they also state that, whilst there are reports flying around that the Bundesliga side want 100 million Euros, they will actually settle for a smaller fee this summer. What that is exactly, remains unclear. The report says that it would still have to be a "substantial investment."
This would certainly be an interesting signing. Clearly, Nmecha is a far more mobile player than Xhaka, and also a lot younger. He is not as good on the ball as the Swiss captain, but he is very capable himself, and has shown that already at this summer's FIFA World Cup.
On that note, don't be thinking that this is a typical World Cup hype transfer. The midfielder has been very good for Dortmund for a while now, and it is due to his performances there that he has been trusted to be a starter for Germany at the tournament. He has not just spawned into a starting role, he earned it because of his consistently excellent performances.
Let's wait and see. Like with a lot of deals this summer, any potential transfer could take a while due to the World Cup, depending on the team's progress.
