Poor tactical and managerial decisions at Chelsea have left one of the club's biggest stars open to a summer exit.
According to The Sun, the 23-year-old player feels frustrated by a recent change in Chelsea's tactics under manager Liam Rosenior. Palmer reportedly feels that these structural adjustments have deprived him of the space needed on the pitch to influence matches as he did during his first season in west London.
Adding to his discontent is the departure of Nicolas Jackson, who joined Bayern Munich in September on a season-long loan, as their playing styles were compatible. With Jackson's departure and Chelsea's signings of Joao Pedro and Liam Delap, the chemistry in the final third has struggled to reach last season's levels.
The situation has put Manchester United, Real Madrid, and Bayern Munich on high alert. Although Chelsea considers Palmer "untouchable" and he is under contract until 2033, a £150 million valuation has been discussed for the talented forward. It is widely rumored that Palmer, a United fan since childhood, does not feel at home in London.
United's interest is strengthened by the presence of sporting director Jason Wilcox, who previously ran Manchester City's academy during Palmer's rise. Wilcox is a great admirer of the player and has already expressed his conviction that "one of City's academy graduates could go on to win the Ballon d'Or." With Wilcox and chief executive Omar Berrada leading the signing effort, ties to City at Old Trafford are stronger than ever.
It has been a difficult season for Palmer. His frustration recently reached a boiling point during the heavy 3-0 defeat to Everton, where he was seen venting his anger at teammate Pedro Neto for denying him a clear goal-scoring opportunity.
Despite these outbursts, club sources insist the player has not "thrown in the towel," although his performances have lacked their usual spark. Chelsea's overall form is also a significant factor in the player's mood. The Blues currently sit sixth in the Premier League and face a tough battle to secure a Champions League spot for next season.
Following a humiliating exit from Europe on an 8-2 aggregate scoreline at the hands of Paris Saint-Germain, the prospect of another year without competing in the top continental competition would make it even harder for the club to convince Palmer to stay.
Although United's summer transfer window priorities are said to be central midfield and left back, the opportunity to sign a player of Palmer's caliber could be too good to pass up. The Red Devils already attempted to sign Delap before he chose Chelsea, and now, under Sir Jim Ratcliffe's leadership, they are determined not to miss out on top domestic talent again.
