Thomas Tuchel snubs a fully fit Cole Palmer for upcoming Nations League fixtures, citing past absences and missed opportunities while rewarding record-signing Morgan Rogers with a call-up.

Former Chelsea head coach Thomas Tuchel has announced his England squad for the upcoming UEFA Nations League fixtures

The Premier League takes a two-week break after the Blues' visit to Sunderland as the final international break of 2026 gets underway.

Following previous comments about star midfielder Cole Palmer, Tuchel has once again opted not to select the Blues' number 10.

Despite registering six goal contributions in the Premier League after nine matches, Palmer's performances have seemingly not been enough to convince the England boss.

Tuchel previously questioned Palmer's availability and his ability to capitalise on opportunities, stating in September: “Cole Palmer misses too many opportunities, and he misses way too many camps with injuries. It’s not his fault… I can only judge what I witness in my team. For that, you have to be in camp.”

Tuchel also omitted the 24-year-old from his 2026 FIFA World Cup squad following a series of injuries and a dip in form.

According to The Telegraph, Palmer is fully fit, meaning his omission was a decision made solely by Tuchel.

Palmer’s last international appearance came in March 2026 during England’s 1-0 defeat to Japan at Wembley. The Chelsea star was also absent from the previous three camps in September, October and November 2025 following a groin injury.

Meanwhile, his teammate Morgan Rogers has once again been called up for his country after an impressive start to the campaign. Chelsea’s number 17 has been flawless since completing a club-record £117 million move from Aston Villa.

The 24-year-old has scored five goals for the Blues so far this season. His impressive performances have also put him among the early contenders for the Premier League Player of the Season award.

Club captain Reece James was also absent from Tuchel's selection following minor knee surgery, with the defender now expected to return in early 2027.

The Three Lions take on Croatia and world champions Spain as they look to secure qualification for the quarter-final stage.

What other Chelsea players have been called up so far?

So far, Argentina trio Aaron Anselmino, Valentín Barco and Emiliano Martínez have been called up for two international friendlies.

Martínez's inclusion is particularly surprising given that the goalkeeper was stretchered off with a jaw injury during the second half of Chelsea's 2-0 victory over Everton.

The 34-year-old has subsequently missed the last three games due to the setback, which has seen Mike Penders handed an opportunity. The Belgian goalkeeper has been nominated for the recent Save of the Month award, covering October.

Brazilian teenager Estêvão Willian has once again been called up by Carlo Ancelotti for two friendlies against Japan and Singapore.

France are yet to announce their squad, with Malo Gusto hoping to earn a recall after missing the previous selection.
