A potential new contract is a bigger decision to make for Estevao than it is for Chelsea.

Chelsea are open to offering Estevao Willian an improved contract despite his limited role in the team under Xabi Alonso, according to reports.

Estevao arrived at Chelsea from Brazilian side Palmeiras in the summer of 2025 on a deal worth an initial £29 million.

He signed an eight-year contract with the Blues, tying him to the club until the summer of 2033. This puts him among the players with the longest Chelsea contracts, after Cole Palmer, Joao Pedro, and Geovany Quenda, whose deals run until 2034.

Estevao’s career at Chelsea has not developed as quickly as many hoped after such an exciting debut season at Stamford Bridge. He featured regularly last season, making 36 appearances across all competitions, and could have played more if a hamstring injury hadn't interrupted his campaign.

However, since Alonso took over in the summer, the 19-year-old has played a less prominent role despite the manager’s insistence that the young winger “will have his moments and more minutes”.

Evidently, Estevao has played only 154 minutes of football in seven appearances for the Blues this season. Outside of the Carabao Cup, the Brazil international has only made 10-minute-or-less second-half cameos.

Chelsea to reward Estevao’s patience with an improved deal

Speaking about his limited minutes with Chelsea during international duty with Brazil, Estevao gave a very mature response. He argued that he could only work harder and worry about what he could control, while acknowledging Alonso’s position as the decision-maker.

According to the Daily Mail, Chelsea plan to reward Estevao’s perseverance with a potential new contract. This would also indicate the trust between the club and the highly-rated young talent.

That said, it remains unclear whether Estevao would agree to such a proposition.

It makes sense for Chelsea to lock down arguably one of world football's most coveted talents on a longer deal, but from Estevao’s perspective, he may want to keep his options open. Reece James, Moises Caicedo, Joao Pedro, and Cole Palmer have all recently been rewarded with improved deals by the club.

Regardless of how Chelsea view his potential, Estevao is unlikely to fulfil his ceiling without enough opportunities to develop on the pitch.

The issue is that Alonso understandably has very little incentive to unsettle his red-hot front three of Palmer, Morgan Rogers, and Joao Pedro. Alonso would likely need a formation change to fit Estevao into his plans and give him more meaningful minutes.

The good news is that Estevao seems to be content with his situation and still determined to fight for his spot in the team, based on his latest CFC+ documentary “I Am Estevao”.

The welcoming Chelsea supporters certainly played a big part in this.

"I see how much affection Chelsea fans have for me," Estevao said in the documentary. "I think this affection makes me feel at home, makes me love this club more."
