Ahead of what feels like yet another huge transfer window for the club, here is an update on the latest regarding potential signings in the centre of defence
Although we could be here all day discussing which positions Chelsea need in the transfer window this summer, despite the money spent over the last four years, it is clear that one of the positions that needs addressing is central defense.
Too many times this season, individual mistakes from defenders have cost the team. Although all is well and Levi Colwill will be fully back from his injury next season, it would be unwise to rely on a player to carry the defense after suffering an ACL injury.
There is some hope from the fanbase that, in a best-case scenario, we could see a Cobham duo of Colwill and Josh Acheampong as the starting pair next season, but it would still feel like negligence not to bring in at least one external option. But, who?
Well, there has been some noise in that department of late. TalkSPORT is reporting there is interest from Chelsea, as well as other clubs, in AFC Bournemouth defender Marcos Senesi, who is out of contract and is "hoping to agree terms with a new club" before the season ends, as per the TalkSPORT report.
However, Ben Jacobs (from the above report) also says that, at the moment, the club is not expected to pursue a deal for Senesi despite the initial interest, and is instead prioritizing "height and strength" in a player to partner Colwill.
Well, interestingly is 6'3, and has a lot of physical attributes. It feels like he could have been given more of a chance this season, with under full 14 90's played so far, despite the poor form of other players in his position.
One other player who has been brought up is Brighton and Hove Albion central defender Jan Paul van Hecke. According to Dutch media, the defender "dreams" of playing for a top club in England, and Chelsea is among those showing interest.
Now, he certainly would be far from the only bit of business between the two clubs in recent years. Not sure he's the dominant physical profile that the club is looking for. Admittedly, he is 6'2, but he is known more for his ball-handling and composure than for being a physical specimen.
Safe to say there will be plenty more links over the coming weeks and months. When this many players in one position are mentioned, it is clear it is a part of the pitch that the club will be looking to address. Let's see.
