Jesse Derry will spend the season on loan at Sporting CP to impress and earn his way back into the club he loves, Chelsea. For now, however, the glut of wingers at Stamford Bridge has forced him out.
Recently, the loan of young Jesse Derry to Sporting CP in the Primeira Liga was confirmed, which, at first glance, seems like an excellent decision for the young Chelsea winger. Remember that the Blues just signed Geovany Quenda, curiously also from the Portuguese club. So the winger position at the English club is beginning to be overcrowded, without counting the possibility that they sign a natural left winger.
Taking this into account, the possibility that Derry can have participation, not even in the starting lineup, but as a recurring substitute during the Xabi Alonso era, becomes quite complicated. His arrival in Portugal will give him the regularity he needs to keep improving, without forgetting that Sporting will participate in the Champions League during the next season, the best scenario to show the world what he is capable of.
The only negative thing we can find in this is that he will get used to the level of competition and the rhythm of play in the Primeira Liga, which is notably inferior to the Premier League in all respects. However, we repeat that he should be more regular in Portugal than he is in England, where he spends a large part of the season on the bench; everything becomes a matter of minutes of play rather than the quality of the competition.
This agreement seems to be an exchange, because, as we just commented, the announcement of Derry's arrival to Sporting preceded that of Quenda, which was published a few hours later, in which it was indicated that the west London club had bought the young Portuguese winger for an amount of £44 million and a long-term eight-year contract, a strategy that the club has repeated a lot lately.
Quenda played 30 matches, scored four goals, and gave nine assists during the 2025/26 season. Despite not sounding so spectacular, what stands out in the player is his ability to dribble past defenders. He has a lot of physical strength and is quite agile, qualities the coach appreciates and will exploit to the fullest, no doubt.
On the other hand, Derry is already at 100% to face his new stage at Sporting, because, remember, on May 4, he suffered a severe head injury during a match against Nottingham Forest, which kept him out of the team's call-up for a couple of weeks. Now, he will have to earn his place on a new team, in a new country, and with new teammates, which will be a significant challenge for the young Englishman in his quest to be considered again by the team of his dreams.
