Recent comments from Argentine midfielder Enzo Fernandez about his affection for Madrid sparked anger from one of Chelsea’s most iconic stars.
Enzo Fernandez’s statements in a broadcast on the social media platform Kick, in which he clearly said he would like to live in Madrid, revived rumors that, for some time, have linked him as a reinforcement for Real Madrid for next season.
Immediately, they were echoed in both Spain and England. On the Iberian Peninsula, it generated excitement, since the former River Plate player is considered one of the best midfielders in the world today. Meanwhile, in the United Kingdom, it drew criticism, as it was interpreted as an open desire to leave the Premier League.
Even former Chelsea player Obi Mikel confronted Enzo Fernandez for not feeling that the London club is the place to develop most of his career. “This is Chelsea, not a stepping stone to sign for another team,” he declared, according to media such as Marca, Diario AS, and Mundo Deportivo.
But that was not all. The Nigerian went a little further and even suggested that the Argentine national team player should no longer wear the English team’s shirt: “If your heart is already in Madrid, you should not wear blue. At Chelsea, we played for the badge, not for a future transfer…”
It is worth clarifying that Enzo has a contract with Chelsea signed until mid-2032 and that his release clause, according to Transfermarkt, is €90 million. If Real Madrid wants to secure his services, they will have to pay at least that sum.
Media outlets in Spain reaffirm that Real Madrid understands it needs to reinforce the midfield. The first name that emerged was Rodri, currently at Manchester City. However, Florentino Perez gave him the thumbs down. He does not forgive his attitude toward the club and Vinicius Junior during the 2024 Ballon d’Or ceremony. So Enzo Fernandez appears as the main option, both because of his skills and his young age.
Now it is only a matter of time until the summer transfer window opens, and we will see how this story ends, with Real Madrid interested in reinforcing its midfield and Enzo not entirely comfortable at Stamford Bridge. Everything seems to indicate that the Argentine’s destination will be the Spanish capital.
