Sad news about Portuguese football, and about football in Europe, has come up. A well-known Portuguese former goalkeeper and coach, Silvino Louro, has died at the age of 67.
Silvino has had a great career as a keeper, playing for several important teams in Portugal, such as Benfica, Vitória Setúbal, and Porto. He has also been part of the Portuguese national team.
After his playing career, Silvino began coaching as a goalkeeper coach, serving on the staff of one of the world's best coaches, Jose Mourinho, for many years. Louro worked with Mourinho at Porto, Chelsea, Inter, Real Madrid, and Manchester United. Also, the Portuguese goalkeeper coach tried an experience at Al Hilal as a goalkeeper coach.
Louro was one of the closest people to Jose Mourinho during their time together, and he was a key member of his technical staff. During his career, Silvino won many titles, including 2 UEFA Champions League titles, 3 Premier League titles, 2 Serie A titles, 1 Spanish La Liga title, 1 Europa League title, and other cups.
During his career as a goalkeeper coach, Louro had the chance to train some of the world's best goalkeepers. At Porto, he trained Vitor Baia; at Chelsea, he trained Petr Cech and Courtois; at Inter, he trained Julio Cesar; at Real Madrid, he trained Iker Casillas; and at Manchester United, he trained David De Gea.
During their tenure working with Silvino, several goalkeepers won the UEFA Best Goalkeeper award, including Vitor Baia at Porto in 2004, Petr Cech at Chelsea in 2005 and 2007, and Julio Cesar at Inter in 2010.
As the Daily Mail reported, the reason for his death was after battling a prolonged illness. Since his death was confirmed, the clubs that he worked for and different football personalities have expressed their condolences and paid tribute to the former goalkeeper coach.
Porto, Inter, Real Madrid, and Manchester United have paid tribute to the former Portuguese keeper coach by releasing statements on their official websites. Also, his close friend Jose Mourinho paid tribute to him in a statement on his Instagram account. His former keepers, Cech and De Gea, reacted to the news of his death and paid tribute to him, as did Chelsea's former captain, John Terry.
