After a season of underperformance and no trophies so far, Liverpool’s board would welcome a former Chelsea coach to the sideline.
The Dutch coach's honeymoon at Anfield has abruptly ended. Liverpool could end up without trophies and out of the Champions League after losing 2-0 in the first leg of the quarterfinal against Paris Saint-Germain. In the Premier League, the Reds sit 21 points behind leaders Arsenal.
His tactical decisions are already being questioned, especially after the poor performance at Parc des Princes. After the match, the coach admitted that Liverpool was "lucky to lose only 2-0," as the French side was far superior and could have extended its lead.
World Cup winner Marco Materazzi believes it is time for a change on the Anfield sideline and proposes his compatriot Enzo Maresca, former Chelsea coach, as the ideal candidate to lead the club. Maresca, who led Chelsea to win the Conference League and the Club World Cup, has been without a team since January.
In statements to Hajper, the former Inter defender explained why the 46-year-old coach is the right man for the job: "Can Enzo Maresca turn Real Madrid into champions again? Yes, why not! He speaks Spanish very well because he was at Sevilla, but I think Maresca also has a good chance of landing a job in the Premier League for next season.
Newcastle United? I'm not convinced. Manchester United would be a good option, but they are heavily linked to City. Liverpool, on the other hand, is the ideal destination: Maresca is the perfect coach to rebuild the team and give it a new vision."
Despite his departure from West London, Maresca's reputation remains excellent, and current Chelsea stars speak of the impact he had on the squad. He is credited with bringing stability to a chaotic environment, a view shared by those who worked with him daily.
Defender Marc Cucurella lamented his departure and said, "When a coach gives you that confidence and offers you a platform to fight for titles, you would give your life for him. The moment Maresca left had a huge impact on us. Those are the club's decisions. If you had asked me, I would not have made that decision."
Slot's tactical decisions, particularly leaving Mohamed Salah on the bench during the defeat, have been heavily criticized. The coach argued that in the final minutes, he prioritized "surviving" over scoring, but the explanation did not convince those who doubt his spark.
The Reds must balance their dwindling Champions League hopes with the pressure to deliver a historic comeback. If Slot does not beat PSG, the shadow of Maresca over the Anfield sideline will grow.
