According to a surprise recent report, an infamous former Chelsea player would be interested in coming back to SW6 if the club decided to make an offer.
Back in January of 2014, Chelsea completed the signing of a then 21-year old Mohamed Salah from Swiss club FC Basel for a fee of just over £13 million pounds.
The winger had impressed in the Europa League semi finals the year before, scoring at Stamford Bridge in the second leg, with Chelsea winning 5-2 on aggregate and going onto win the competition.
However, things did not really work out in SW6, with Jose Mourinho reluctant to give him a chance. He actually scored in the famous 6-0 win over Arsenal in Arsene Wenger's 1000th game, but that was one of just two Premier League goals he scored for the club.
Just 12 months later, he was loaned out to Fiorentina in Serie A, and that summer, he joined AS Roma on loan, before joining them permanently a year later. Then, just another year after that, he rejoined the Premier League when he signed for Liverpool, and well, the rest is history. Ever since then, Chelsea fans have had to wonder "What if?"
After nine years on Merseyside, Salah left the club this summer, and it is yet to be confirmed who his next club will be. He has been broadly linked with a move back to Serie A, with fans pointing out the success of older players over there in recent years. He has also been linked with a move to Saudi Arabia and even back home in Egypt.
Generally, Salah has not been linked with a move within the Premier League. He is clearly someone very settled in England, so some have wondered if he may like to stay in the country.
Well, maybe he will, and maybe it will be at Chelsea? According to Egyptian TV channel ON Sport (via CFCPys), there has been no contact between Chelsea and Salah, but if the club were to make an offer, the player has told friends that he would be open to a return, and that the Blues are the only English team he would do that for.
Very interesting indeed. Perhaps the cliche "unfinished business" is currently resonating with him? Every other club he has played for there has been success of some kind. Perhaps he wants to make that the case with Chelsea too. At 34, he is certainly getting on now, but he is definitely an upgrade on certain wingers at the club. It would stunt Estevao's development, however. Perhaps a more central role?
