After landing in Australia, Chelsea trained at the Allianz Stadium in Sydney on Sunday evening as preparations for their pre-season opener continued.

Xabi Alonso is embarking on his first season in charge of Chelsea, and fans got to see a first glimpse of the Blues as they touched down for their tour of Australia, which will see them play two games before heading to Asia for the second leg of the overseas tour.

The two games in Australia come against Western Sydney Wanderers and Tottenham Hotspur.

Chelsea took a 28-man squad out to Australia, with several notable absentees, including those involved in the World Cup. Emmanuel Emegha and Geovany Quenda didn't travel due to injuries.

Quenda will join the squad after Australia, while Emegha is likely to be fit for the start of the new Premier League season, which gets underway on August 24 against Fulham.

Having briefly settled into their new surroundings in New South Wales, Chelsea trained on Sunday evening in front of a small crowd.

Here are four things we learned from Chelsea's first 15 minutes of the open training session.

Chelsea's training set-up

It was a light start for the Chelsea players who made their way out onto the grass, cheered on by the supporters who had come to visit them.

They were initially put into three groups for rotational drills to warm up. There were resistance bands for arm work, which coincided with ball work too.

A separate session saw players work with resistance bands positioned around the knees, while a third group focused on hurdle-based drills.

Towards the end of the session, all players came together for a rondo session to build up the intensity.

Xabi Alonso and the Chelsea coaching staff heavily involved

During the short session, Alonso and his staff were all heavily involved in the drills.

Alonso was seen working with youngster Landon Emenalo, throwing the ball to him as they did ball work along with arm exercises with resistance bands.

The 44-year-old even showed off his skills to prove he still has it in the locker following his playing days.

First sighting of Marco Palestra

Following his summer arrival from Atalanta, the 21-year-old defender joined the group for the session in Sydney.

His addition offers Chelsea versatility at the back should Alonso want to play either three or four at the back.

He could be seen up close, given he was warming up by the media pen at the Allianz Stadium.

Palestra has been involved in the sessions at Cobham, but this is the first time for the fans and media to see him.

Positive spirits within Chelsea camp

As they continue to overcome their jet lag after the 10,500+ mile journey from London, Chelsea's players were in a positive mood.

Estevao and Romeo Lavia were spotted laughing together. Cole Palmer and Tosin Adarabioyo trained together as they continued their friendship from off the pitch, having been plane buddies on the way out to Australia.

All the squad will be wanting to prove themselves, and the competitiveness level will no doubt increase over the coming days and weeks.

But Alonso wants a unified group, and early signs suggest he is going to get just that.
