As injuries sideline Maxence Lacroix, Wesley Fofana seizes a redemption arc at Stamford Bridge, earning Xabi Alonso’s trust despite recent errors as the Blues target a resurgence.

Chelsea’s visit to Sunderland on Sunday marks the first of three matches in November as Xabi Alonso’s side look to climb the Premier League table.

With the final international break of 2026 around the corner, the Blues will be looking to finish on a better note than they did before the previous break. A 3-0 away defeat to west London rivals Brentford left a sour taste, but Sunday presents an opportunity to see whether Chelsea have evolved.

Injuries have become a regular occurrence in recent weeks, to the point where a break in action may well do Chelsea some good. Key defender Maxence Lacroix and star striker Joao Pedro have been notable casualties in recent weeks, with the former expected to be out until early 2027.

Lacroix’s setback has seen Wesley Fofana return to the starting XI, giving him an opportunity to impress.

The Frenchman joined Chelsea in August 2022 from Leicester City for a fee in the region of £70 million.

Since making the move to Stamford Bridge, the 25-year-old has struggled to lay down a marker due to numerous injury troubles.

According to Transfermarkt, Fofana has missed 126 matches through injury since his arrival in west London. Setbacks have hampered the defender so much that he has only recently surpassed 75 appearances in a Blues shirt across a span of five seasons.

Turbulence hasn’t just taken place on the pitch. Since arriving in 2022, six permanent managers have sat in the hot seat. One manager who is backing the central defender is new boss Xabi Alonso.

Previewing the clash with Sunderland, the 44-year-old was asked by reporters how Fofana had overcome recent mistakes against both Liverpool and Manchester United.

He said: “For sure, the mistakes, he knew and he reacted really well the second half he was solid. He was reliable as he was in Liverpool despite of the penalty.”

Against Liverpool, the defender gave away a costly penalty for a handball offence before sending his decisive penalty over the bar in the shootout, knocking Chelsea out of the League Cup.

In the following game against Man Utd, Fofana committed two errors, both of which presented huge opportunities for the visitors. During the second half, however, he bounced back to help secure a clean sheet.

The centre-back remains on the hunt for his first piece of silverware at Stamford Bridge. During Chelsea’s Conference League and Club World Cup triumphs, injuries and precautionary measures saw him excluded from the squad, meaning the wait for an official title goes on.

With backing from Alonso and Lacroix sidelined for a number of weeks, it’s now up to Fofana to retain his place in the team and reward the manager for his ongoing trust, starting with the trip to Sunderland on November 8.
