Borussia Dortmund coach Niko Kovac spoke about Anselmino, saying they are keeping an eye on the player and lamenting his lack of minutes at his current club, Strasbourg.
Aaron Anselmino left Boca in mid-2024 to begin his journey in Europe. Chelsea took him after paying the Xeneize €18 million. However, having no place (he logged only 2 minutes against Benfica in the Round of 16 of the 2025 FIFA Club World Cup in the United States), he was loaned to Borussia Dortmund in August 2025.
Once on the German team, his real experience in the Old Continent began. And although he suffered injuries that disrupted his continuity, when he was fully fit, he was highly regarded by coach Niko Kovac. For that reason, both the Croatian and the player lamented the English club's abrupt decision to cut the loan in January of this year.
It is important to remember that, although Anselmino played only 10 matches at Dortmund, he earned the respect of both the fans and the coach, who said publicly that he seemed to him a player who loved to defend, and from the first day showed great respect for the fans, comparing his passion to the fans of his former team, Boca Juniors.
But the strangest part was that they did not do it to add Aaron Anselmino to the squad led by Liam Rosenior, but rather to send him to Racing Strasbourg, the Ligue 1 team in France that is part of the same business group (BlueCo) led by Chelsea.
However, he is not playing for the French team either. He has barely accumulated 15 minutes across three matches in the domestic league (Marseille, Lyon, and Nice), which makes Dortmund lament his situation even more, because they ended up taking away a piece that fit their system.
That is what Niko Kovac himself declared in the news conference he gave ahead of the match against Bayer Leverkusen: “Sometimes I check to see how Strasbourg has played, or if (Anselmino) has played. It hurts me that he doesn’t play as often as before, or as often as he would have with us.”
Aaron Anselmino’s loan at Racing Strasbourg ends in mid-2026. After that, Chelsea will decide whether to extend the loan, integrate him into its squad, or loan him to another club. Whatever the decision, the player has a contract with the London club until June 2031, and his release clause is €20 million.
