Cole Palmer will now serve a one-game suspension after getting sent off against Tottenham.
Cole Palmer has issued an apology after getting sent off during Chelsea's 2-0 defeat to Tottenham Hotspur.
Xabi Alonso's side conceded two poor goals late in the second half. A Mike Penders own goal, a failed punch from a corner, saw Spurs take the lead, before Mathys Tel struck into the bottom corner in the 87th minute to seal a memorable night for Spurs.
But Chelsea's night was dealt two huge blows. Joao Pedro has suffered an injury setback, and the Blues now await details on its severity.
"Yesterday (Friday) in training, he felt something, and at the moment he has some liquid, so we have to do some tests to know how big the injury is," Alonso confirmed on Saturday prior to the defeat. "For sure, it's disappointing, but we need to carry on."
Matters worsened on the pitch when Cole Palmer was sent off after receiving two yellow cards. The 24-year-old was booked in the 70th minute after his reaction to Mateus Fernandes handling the ball.
10 minutes later, Palmer was shown his marching orders following a foul on former Chelsea midfielder Conor Gallagher.
Chelsea were punished all over the pitch, and Palmer's red card summed up the evening to forget, which will see the England international miss their Carabao Cup fourth-round tie against Liverpool on Wednesday night at Anfield.
Palmer has now broken his silence with a message to apologise, stating it was 'not good enough'.
He wrote on Instagram: "Not good enough by me. Live n learn! Apologies. Onto the next."
Fortunately for Chelsea, Palmer will only miss one match, so he will return against Manchester United when the Blues host Michael Carrick's side next Saturday.
Double whammy for Chelsea with Palmer's red card
It's unclear whether Chelsea could have found an equaliser against Spurs, but with Palmer on the pitch, they would have had a much better chance prior to Tel's doubler to sink the hosts.
Palmer's absence against Liverpool could hurt them again, especially with Joao Pedro out as well. They only have Morgan Rogers from their regular front three available for the cup tie.
It will likely offer Estevao Willian and Geovany Quenda chances to impress as they seek more minutes under Alonso, though Palmer's absence will be felt, and he will hope his suspension doesn't cost them another match.
Chelsea showed that they are still capable of ill-disciplined moments and Palmer's red card proved that.
An apology is the least the Chelsea attacker can offer, and he likely shared that immediately in the dressing room to his teammates at full-time.
Chelsea must learn quickly from the defeat, although it won't be forgotten for some time, and Palmer must ensure he isn't caught out by being sent off after two needless yellow cards.
