Gary O’Neil criticized BlueCo, the co-owners of RC Strasbourg and Chelsea FC, saying that during the winter transfer window, instead of strengthening the team, they only weakened it — something that led to the team’s elimination from every competition they were in.
Strasbourg coach Gary O’Neil is quite upset with BlueCo, which is a co-owner of the club and of Chelsea. This is because he feels that during the winter transfer window, instead of strengthening the team, they only weakened it.
Mentioning specific cases such as David Datro Fofana, Aaron Anselmino, Mamadou Sarr, and Kendry Paez. Some of these examples saw their loans to the French club abruptly cut short by Chelsea due to decisions made by the English team itself.
Noticeably upset, coach O’Neil said that his team needs two center forwards and also took the chance to criticize the current leadership, “I need two center forwards.
The owners want to give me the resources to perform next season, but we have to improve the club’s culture, player quality, and squad depth. We messed up in the January transfer market. Instead of improving the squad, we weakened it,” he said.
Added to all this are the two semifinals the club lost in less than 3 weeks. First, they fell to Nice in the French Cup, then they were defeated by Rayo Vallecano in the Conference League. All this makes the coach even more upset and disappointed with his squad.
“I am angry. I hope the players are, too. There are two games left, and they must show me they are up to playing with us next season. We will get nowhere playing like this. They have disappointed me greatly, even more than they did on Thursday against Vallecano. They have to do better. Football is full of sharks, and they must know that. I told them we were playing a final, and they did not perform as they should,” he concluded.
Unfortunately for the team, it no longer has any hope of qualifying for any European competition next season. It will have to settle and compete for all available resources to finish in the best possible position in Ligue 1, and, why not, win the French Cup; this would secure a spot in the Europa League for the 2027/28 season.
But for now, the team must rethink which signings to make this summer, since it was significantly affected by players who left the club midseason.
