Rosenior was fired by Chelsea on Wednesday after a string of poor results, but a clause in his contract forces the club to pay him the remainder of his salary.

The cycle of Liam Rosenior at Chelsea has come to an end. The coach, 41, who had taken over the London team just over three months ago, was fired on Wednesday following negative results and other internal issues within the squad, such as the clash with Argentine Enzo Fernandez.

“On behalf of everyone at Chelsea FC, we would like to record our thanks to Liam and his staff for all the effort they put in during their time at the Club. Liam has always behaved with the utmost integrity and professionalism since his appointment midway through the season,” began the Blues’ statement confirming the firing of the English coach’s contract, who had taken over on Jan. 6, 2026, after leaving Racing Strasbourg.

“This has not been a decision the Club has taken lightly; however, recent results and performances have not met expectations, and there is still much to play for this season. Everyone at Chelsea FC wishes Liam every success in the future.” Continued the institution that plays in the Premier League.

For their part, they announced that Calum McFarlane “will take charge of the team as interim head coach until the end of the season, supported by the club’s coaching staff, as we strive to secure qualification for European competitions and advance in the FA Cup.” It should be noted that Chelsea has five consecutive losses, the last a 0-3 against Brighton, which temporarily left them out of next year’s international competitions.

“While the Club works to bring stability to the head coach position, we will undertake a process of self-reflection to make the right long-term appointment,” concluded Chelsea’s board regarding the recently made decision, which includes the fifth coaching change in five years.

One of the issues to consider about the coach’s firing is that Chelsea had signed a contract with him for the next six and a half months; that is, until June 2032. Given the situation, the London team will have to pay multimillion-dollar compensation.

According to what was published by the British newspaper The Sun, the club would have to pay about £24 million for terminating Rosenior’s contract early, unless there is a special clause in the contract or an agreement with the coach.
