With Emiliano Martinez sidelined by injury, Mike Penders faces the prospect of being Chelsea's number one goalkeeper for a tricky run of games.

When Mike Penders returns to training next week ahead of Chelsea’s Premier League clash with Tottenham, he will likely be preparing to make his first run of starts for Chelsea.

The Belgian goalkeeper’s importance has increased ahead of a tricky run of games after Emiliano Martinez was forced off through injury during the Blues’ 2-0 away victory over Everton.

Penders, who agreed to join Chelsea from Belgian side Genk in 2024 for a fee in the region of £17 million, has spent the majority of his time out on loan.

The 21-year-old was loaned back to Genk for the 2024/25 season before spending the 2025/26 season at Strasbourg. Prior to joining the French side, the young prospect spent the summer in the United States with the Blues for the FIFA Club World Cup, a competition Chelsea went on to win.

Ahead of the 2026/27 season, Penders returned to pre-season late, following Belgium’s run to the quarter-finals of the 2026 FIFA World Cup, where they fell to eventual winners Spain. His late arrival restricted his early opportunities under Xabi Alonso, and he has made only two appearances, both in the League Cup.

Following overnight tests and surgery, the club confirmed in a statement that Martinez would be sidelined for a number of weeks.

The goalkeeper also confirmed the news on Instagram, saying: “Thanks to everyone for the messages. The operation went well. The most important thing is that we won… We’ll be back in a few weeks.”

Given that Penders missed pre-season and has only had opportunities in the League Cup, it is vital that he now uses his Premier League opportunities to send a message that he is not content with occupying the bench.

With four matches still to play before the November international break, the 21-year-old will lead the backline against Tottenham, Liverpool, Manchester United and Sunderland.

With Chelsea not competing in Europe this season, Penders’ opportunity is particularly significant. Martinez was signed to become the club’s first-choice goalkeeper following Robert Sanchez’s departure to Como, making this run of fixtures an unexpected opening for the Belgian.

Furthermore, with the Argentine approaching the latter stages of his career, the Blues’ hierarchy will be considering succession plans for the future. This upcoming run of games presents Penders with his greatest opportunity yet.

Penders kept eight clean sheets in 33 Ligue 1 appearances. In just over 20 minutes in his Premier League debut, he made one save and showed he could command his area, coming off his line at least twice to claim the ball. The goalkeeper also became the youngest keeper to play in the Premier League for the club.

His spell at Strasbourg could be considered a success, but there was still room for improvement. If he wants to become Chelsea’s number-one goalkeeper, Penders must improve his handling and avoid parrying shots into dangerous areas.

The alternatives to the Belgian prospect include Teddy Sharman-Lowe and Gabriel Slonina, neither of whom has made a competitive appearance for the Blues. Sharman-Lowe served as Alonso’s backup on at least three occasions during the tour of Australia and Asia.

Meanwhile, Slonina has made only two appearances across pre-season tours in 2023 and 2026.

With Martinez sidelined and Chelsea’s defensive frailties still a concern, Penders has an opportunity to prove he can be more than a number two choice. If he impresses during this run of fixtures, he could give Chelsea’s hierarchy a strong reason to consider him a long-term solution between the posts.
