One of Chelsea’s most important stars addressed speculation that had him leaving the club, specifically for Manchester.
Chelsea’s star player has seen his name constantly linked with a possible return to the northwest, where he came up through the youth ranks at Manchester City before signing for Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023. However, in statements ahead of a crucial Premier League clash against Manchester United, Palmer made it clear he has no intention of leaving the Blues, despite the allure of Old Trafford.
“Everyone talks,” Palmer said in an interview with The Guardian when asked about the Manchester United rumors. “When I see it, I laugh. Manchester is my home, all my family is there, but I don’t miss it. Maybe I would miss it if I didn’t go back for three months, but then when I return, I think there’s nothing there for me. I have no plans to leave Chelsea. We still have a lot to fight for.”
Despite some ups and downs under the leadership of Liam Rosenior, Palmer still believes in the club’s long-term vision. The player, 23, under contract until 2033, revealed that conversations with captain Reece James and the board have reinforced his confidence in the team’s direction.
“Reece and I have talked a lot,” Palmer explained. “About what we need, the players we have to sign, and how things should go. He wouldn’t have signed a new contract if he didn’t know what’s going on.
Reece wouldn’t sign a six-year contract if he hadn’t talked to the owners and the executives. It’s something we’re working on together. We’re on the same wavelength. We want to win now, and if we reinforce well in the summer, next season we can fight for major titles.”
Despite a groin injury that has kept him from maintaining his rhythm, Palmer has played 27 games this season, scoring 10 goals and providing 3 assists. His contribution is key: Chelsea is sixth, just four points from the Champions League.
“I went to a specialist, and he said it would be 10 to 12 weeks,” Palmer revealed. “I had never had an injury like that before. I came back in December against Leeds, played 30 minutes, and I couldn’t sprint or shoot, but I really wanted to play.”
After returning to his best form, Palmer wants to finish the season strong to make Tuchel’s World Cup roster. After shining in the Euro 2024 final, the forward seeks to regain the level that earned him the PFA Young Player of the Year award.
“I’m fine now,” he insisted. “I just need to get my rhythm back and perform as I did at the start. Last season, I scored 14 goals in 20 Premier League games. Then I played the Club World Cup. I haven’t lost my level; I’ve just been injured. Now I need to focus on these weeks, get back to my best, and if all goes well, travel with England. When I’m happy, I perform at my best.”
