A Stamford Bridge star says it would be hard to turn down the opportunity to sign for FC Barcelona, for both sporting and family reasons.

Cucurella has not ruled out returning to the club where his career truly began. The path of the 27-year-old player to the Premier League was not easy. After debuting in the youth ranks of Espanyol, he joined the famous La Masia academy in 2012 and won a Copa del Rey title with the Catalan team in 2018, after playing seven minutes in the first round.

To get playing time, the defender went on loan to Eibar and Getafe before making the jump to England. Brighton signed him for €20 million in the summer of 2021, and just one year later, the Blues secured his services for a staggering €65.3 million.

Since he arrived at Stamford Bridge, the fullback has established himself as a key piece and has achieved tremendous success, winning the Conference League and the FIFA Club World Cup, in addition to winning the European Championship with Spain in 2024.

This season alone, he has played 41 matches across all competitions. However, when asked about the allure of his childhood team, the defender was completely honest. He stated, “It would be hard to turn it down. It’s not just about me.

I would have to think about my family. If it happens, it happens, and we’ll see what decision is made. You always think about going back. But I am very happy there [in England], and my family is too. I will leave it for a few years from now.”

These latest comments come at a time when rumors are intensifying about several of their star players. Given that a high-profile signing of Enzo Fernandez by Real Madrid has recently been speculated, the London team faces the difficult task of maintaining the focus of its core players.

Adding to this uncertainty are the team’s recent problems on the field. Chelsea has suffered a notable decline in performance, highlighted by its painful elimination from the Champions League. The Blues were knocked out by Paris Saint-Germain in the round of 16, after suffering a heavy 5-2 defeat in France and falling 3-0 at home.

Domestically, they sit in sixth place in the Premier League table with 48 points, desperately fighting to qualify for European competitions amid a complicated period for the dressing room.

Looking ahead, the immediate goal remains to finish the season strong. Internationally, Spain will play a friendly against Egypt on March 31, which will serve as key preparation for the World Cup next summer. Domestically, the club still has an exhausting final stretch in its fight to finish in the top four.

Its schedule includes an FA Cup quarterfinal against Port Vale on April 4, followed by major league matchups. It will host Manchester City and Manchester United in mid-April, before traveling to face Brighton. In May, tough tests await against Liverpool and Tottenham, which will demand maximum focus to salvage the season.
