Sam Kerr showed up when they needed her most: two goals, 63 in total with Chelsea, and she became a legend alongside Fran Kirby.
In a match that showcased her great quality, Kerr scored two decisive goals and reached 63 goals with Chelsea in the Women's Super League. With this achievement, she ties with her former teammate Fran Kirby as the club's all-time leading scorer in the competition, reinforcing her legend in west London.
The Australian opened the scoring in the sixth minute, taking advantage of a pinpoint pass from Erin Cuthbert to beat Courtney Brosnan. Although Everton threatened to equalize, Kerr's predatory instinct in the second half gave her the headlines and the record.
The Toffees dreamed of an upset when Yuka Momiki, taking advantage of Chelsea goalkeeper Hannah Hampton being off her line, scored from a long-range shot from 35 meters to level the match four minutes after the visitor's goal.
Despite the blow, Chelsea kept their composure and controlled the ball. Before halftime, Walsh and Thompson tested Brosnan, but they had to wait until the second half to regain the lead.
The match was decided within eight minutes after the break. Kerr, on a first-time finish, took advantage of a precise cross from Lauren James and made it 1-0 in the 47th minute.
Soon after, a deflected shot from Ellie Carpenter beat the goalkeeper 3-1. Captain Erin Cuthbert sealed it with a half-volley into the corner following a blocked Kerr header. A victory that leaves Chelsea in second place, four points behind United.
Although winning the WSL title is still possible, Sonia Bompastor's main objective is to secure Chelsea's return to the continental elite.
The win at Goodison Park was a statement of intent, especially after the surprising 1-0 loss to the same opponent in the first leg. The result gives them a significant advantage in the fight for Champions League qualification.
Next up for Chelsea Women is a trip to Leicester City on May 3, a must-win if they want to keep any pressure on league leaders Manchester City. The real test, though, comes on May 10, when the same City side stands between Chelsea and an FA Cup final at Wembley.
With Kerr rewriting the record books and the team finding its rhythm, Bompastor's side knows the title is a long shot — but a cup run and a Champions League spot are very much within reach.
