A former teammate reveals how Manchester City's rigorous academy forged Cole Palmer's Chelsea success, highlighting his consistent quality and mental fortitude.

Oscar Bobb, a graduate of the Manchester City academy, has spoken about the sensational rise of his former teammate Cole Palmer after his move to Chelsea.

Since arriving at Stamford Bridge in the summer of 2023, Palmer has established himself as one of the Premier League’s most outstanding players, but Bobb insists that those who saw him train every day at the City Football Academy are not surprised by his stratospheric ascent.

In statements to the Daily Mail about the impact of his former teammate in west London, Fulham forward Bobb praised the way Palmer has seized his opportunity. “Seeing what he did last season didn’t really surprise me. Not at all,” Bobb stated.

“He has always been that good, and I have seen it every day in training for years. When you have that much quality, and you get the chance to show it every week, this is what happens. Everyone at City knew what Cole was capable of, so seeing him do it on the big stage at Chelsea is just proof of his hard work and talent.

“Cole is one of those players who plays the same way in a training session as he does in a cup final. That mental strength is a very important part of why he is doing so well now. He just loves playing football.”

Palmer’s success is just one example of the incredible talent currently being produced by the Manchester City academy. With players like Phil Foden leading the first team and others like Morgan Rogers, Jamie Gittens, and Jadon Sancho making waves elsewhere.

The “golden generation” label is frequently applied to the recent crop of graduates. Bobb acknowledged that the internal competition at the City Football Academy is what drives these youngsters to reach such heights even before making their professional debuts.

Reflecting on the depth of talent he grew up with, Bobb explained: “It is a very special group. When you look at the players who have emerged in recent years, the level is crazy. We all pushed each other every day. You couldn’t afford to have a bad day because there was always someone ready to take your place.

That environment prepares you for anything. Whether you stay at City or you leave, as Cole did, you come out of that academy with the mindset that you can compete with the best in the world.”
