Chelsea joins Manchester United, Arsenal, and PSG in the race for the Aston Villa sensation, a bidding war that could start at £80 million.
According to The Times, Aston Villa has set a price above £80 million for Morgan Rogers, amid expectations of receiving numerous offers. The 23-year-old midfielder has scored 24 goals and provided 23 assists since last season, numbers that cement him as one of the best in the Premier League. His value could rise even further if he shines for England in the upcoming World Cup under the guidance of Thomas Tuchel.
Part of this valuation stems from a sell-on clause agreed upon when he arrived from Middlesbrough for £15 million in February 2024. Middlesbrough will receive 20% of any profit, so Villa needs a premium to maximize its income. The Midlands club, which just renewed him until 2031 without a release clause, has the upper hand in any negotiation.
Despite wanting to keep Rogers, Villa would struggle to turn down a massive offer because of its financial sustainability issues. The club lost £120.3 million and £85.9 million in the two previous seasons, and, although it made money last season, that was thanks to the one-off sale of the women’s team and the “Warehouse” venue. A recent UEFA report warned of its financial troubles and noted that selling a valuable player would be the “simplest way” to avoid future rule violations.
Furthermore, Rogers himself would be open to signing for an elite club. Although he has shone at Villa Park, the opportunity to join a team fighting for the Premier League and playing in the Champions League is very attractive for this versatile forward at his peak.
Arsenal and Manchester United see strengthening the left wing as a priority this summer. The possible arrival of Rogers at Arsenal could mean the departure of Leandro Trossard or Gabriel Martinelli. Trossard, 31, has lost consistency in the second half of the season and has only one year left on his contract. Martinelli’s future is still being debated: the club is unsure whether to renew him or keep him as a squad option.
United is looking for more attacking options and values that Rogers can play both on the wing and in midfield. The Red Devils are planning a deep remodeling of their midfield, and the young talent fits the profile of a dynamic, homegrown player that the INEOS-led recruitment department is seeking.
Chelsea remains in the fight after tracking Rogers for more than a year. With three of the “Big Six” already in the race, the battle for the Villa player will be key in the summer transfer window.
